Teo Macero conducts the Chamber Ensemble from the Syracuse University School of Music, and Hellen McGill plays Ondes Martenot. In the tradition of microtonalists like Harry Partch, Ivan Wyschnegradsky, John Eaton, Lou Harrison, La Monte Young, Ben Johnston, Easley Blackwood, Glenn Branca, Alvin Lucier, Pauline Oliveros, Terry Riley, Alois Haba, Julian Carrillo, Tony Conrad, Joe Maneri, etc. Ives was a wealthy insurance businessman and a visionary early modernist composer admired by Arnold Schoenberg; he would become influential to Henry Cowell, John Cage, Aaron Copeland, Conlon Nancarrow, and Milton Babbitt. Teo Macero worked as a jazz musician and producer with Charles Mingus and Miles Davis (in a crucial editing roll on In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew, among others). Other composers who have experimented with the Odes Martenot are Messiaen, Jolivet, Honegger, Koechlin, Scelsi, Vivier, Edgard Varese, Landowski, Ibert, John Donald Robb, Karel Goeyvaerts, Rod McKuen, Toru Takemitsu, and Micheline Coulombe Saint-Marcoux.Check out my other auctions this week for more avant garde/experimental, electronic/electroacoustic, jazz and funk lps.
