With the possible exception of Watchtower (who've been broken up since the 80s) and Dangerous Toys (and who wants to lay claim to a hair band anyway?), heavy metal ain't one of those genres. From the sound of Southern Gun Culture's latest album Room 65, that's apparently starting to change. Fitting squarely and comfortably in the stoner rock subgenre of underground metal, SGC is a classic Sabbathesque power trio, with fuzz-choked power riffs, bowel-shivering bass grooves, no-nonsense drumming and aggressive but musical vocals. Brawny boogie gives way to dinosaur locomotion, as wah-wah guitar solos share space with thunderous bottom end and melodies ripped from some ogre's gizzard and stretched out on a rack. Guitarist Danny G amiably growls his way through several tunes, but it's bassist Amber L's anguished rasp that demands attention like a spoiled brat in a toy store. Solid songwriting staunchly traditional in its heavy rock grooves and alienated themes, yet still sounding fresh gives SGC an edge over many of its contemporaries, as raging, rumbling cuts like "Salvation," "Art of War" and "Brave New World" attest.
