One of the greatest guitarists in the history of Jazz. This 1965 Verve release includes the hit - Going Out Of My Head plus great treatments of Golden Earrings - End Of A Love Affair - It Was A Very Good Year and more. This album is an orchestrated one. The director (if my memory is not going wrong) was no less than Nelson Riddle the best "easy Jazz orchestra" director of them all! He surrounded Wes with very balanced arrangements, powerful in some points and tender in other points. A perfect velvet background for Wes's fantastic solos. Wes blows here exactly like he did in the Riverside hard bop albums simply the enviroment is richer. This is not an A&M record and Nelson Riddle is a way better director than Don Sebesky (A&M choice for director chair in Wes's albums). A&M records were commercial, radio albums. This is a Jazz album with fantastic arrangements! Big difference! Wes begins here without any hurry. The title track is pure winning sixties soul jazz. What a tone Wes had! Unbelievable! So big, so warm so surrounding! He was unreachable! Jim Hall once joked that one day in the sixties he "thought to close Wes's thumb in a car's door" ... just to tribute his talent. He was SO big!! Then the album's program goes on with some popular tunes. On some of them Wes outplay every cat in the biz. For real. Listen to what he did to "Chim Chim Cheere". Unbelievable! He transformed a simple childish tune in a Jazz anthem! Faaaaaaaantastic! Phenomenal! And a big applause to Oliver Nelson too! Then you have a couple of Wes's best originals, "Naptown blues" and "Twisted blues" and in the end some superlative standards interpretations. Track Listings 1. Goin' out of My Head 2. O Morro Não Tem Vez 3. Boss City 4. Chim Chim Cheree [From Mary Poppins] 5. Naptown Blues 6. Twisted Blues 7. End of a Love Affair 8. It Was a Very Good Year 9. Golden Earrings LIMITED EDITION. This Limited Edition FACTORY SEALED LP is an audiophile collector’s item that simply gives the feeling of being directly in the studio with the artist. This recording is re-mastered from the Original Session Tapes on DCC’s vintage Vacuum-Tube Playback System. The plating of the lacquers is done the same day as cutting using a slow low temperature bath to minimize groove echo and loss of frequency information. The result is the best sounding series of LPs in history. This Out of Print collectible LP has all Liner Notes, Photos, and Artwork from the Original LP faithfully recreated. A SONIC WORK OF ART. These Out of Print gems are the FINEST of the audiophile LP market. The future of these collectibles is so exciting because each piece is a sonic work of art that will never be reproduced using Vacuum-Tube Playback System. PLUS THESE 6 ADDITIONAL 180 GRAM LIMITED EDITIONS WES MEETS BAGS - OUT OF PRINT 180 GRAM LIMITED EDITION - Milt Jackson and Wes Montgomery were made to play together. Each had redefined the technical and expressive capacities of their respective instruments, displayed limitless melodic invention and rhythmic resourcefulness, and provided models of honest, unaffected soul. Their pairing occurred when Jackson joined Montgomery as a Riverside recording artist in 1961 and placed them amidst what amounted to the label’s house rhythm section of Wynton Kelly, Sam Jones and Philly Joe Jones. Included in the program of standards and originals is a classic line by each leader, Montgomery’s “Jingles” (one of three tracks also heard in alternate takes) and Jackson’s saucy blues “S.K.J.” The entire session is a model of relaxed, conversational blowing by five masters. Track Listings 1. S.K.J. 2. Stablemates 3. Stairway To The Stars 4. Blue Roz 5. Sam Sack 6. Jingles 7. Delilah FULL HOUSE - 180 GRAM LIMITED OUT OF PRINT EDITION - The incredibly inventive concepts and style of Wes Montgomery profoundly influenced and permanently changed virtually every jazz guitarist of his day and thereafter and a wide range of rock musicians as well. Yet it is often claimed that Wes was rarely recorded at his very best, that his club performances gave off more warmth and excitement than his studio work. This is his only "live" album for Riverside, his first label, and it is a classic session, featuring tenor sax great Johnny Griffin and marking Montgomery's first meeting with the acclaimed trio of Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb - then working together as Miles Davis' rhythm section Track Listings 1. Full House 2. I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face 3. Blue 'n' Boogie 4. Cariba 5. Come Rain Or Come Shine 6. S.O.S. SMOKIN AT THE HALF NOTE - 180 GRAM LIMITED EDITION Producer Creed Taylor made a wise choice in bringing Jimmy Smith, Wes Montgomery and Oliver Nelson together in 1966: the innate drive of the arrangements audibly animated the man with the "strong thumb" (he did not use a plectrum) and the magician at the organ attacked the keys with just a mite more aggression than in his previous Blue Note recordings. This cauldron bubbles and boils hellishly, the ingredients are as hot as chili sauce, and with every taste one cries out for more but all too soon the five plates are empty. Luckily, one can start at the beginning again with "Down By The Riverside" where Wes plays the guitar as though he had invented it and Jimmy literally explodes on the keys. "Night Train" is an excellent example of Oliver's geniality in arranging for brass, sparingly allotting dabs of sound as it were between the two soloists. This small ensemble with its drums and percussion gives the listener the opportunity to admire the uncanny rapport between the two members of the dynamic duo. All in all a perfect production of the very highest standard. Track Listings 1. Down By The Riverside 2. James And Wes 3. Night Train 4. 13 (Death March) 5. Baby, It’s Cold Outside WES AND JIMMY - 180 GRAM LIMITED EDITION - Producer Creed Taylor made a wise choice in bringing Jimmy Smith, Wes Montgomery and Oliver Nelson together in 1966: the innate drive of the arrangements audibly animated the man with the "strong thumb" (he did not use a plectrum) and the magician at the organ attacked the keys with just a mite more aggression than in his previous Blue Note recordings. Baby, It’s Cold Outside DOWN HERE ON THE GROUND - 180 GRAM LIMITED EDITION Sales figures of the first two LPs for World Pacific Records were minimal at the time when Wes Montgomery's first band was a purely family affair called "The Montgomery Brothers". From California, Wes travelled eastwards, and the Riverside label produced his first jazz recordings. But it was with the label Verve and Creed Taylor, who had risen to the position of producer, with whom he made his true success story. Let's talk money! Creed Taylor left Verve and took several musicians with him, including Montgomery. The CTI-Concept with strings, flutes and oboes led to 'easy-listening jazz' - but in Wes Montgomery's case it was sheer delight. Film themes, bossa nova and themes from the world of pop created a mixture that forced one to concentrate on the fine nuances and rhythmic detail of this new concept. Flights of double octaves, finely chiselled rhythms, blockchords, and a highly individual sound which has yet to be equalled are especially effective in well-known pop songs such as "I Say A Little Prayer" (just try this number to whet your appetite!) and in the blues composition "Goin’ On To Detroit". Pecunia non olet! Let's hope that Wes Montgomery, maestro of the strong thumb (so called because he played without the use of a plectrum), was able to thoroughly enjoy spending his advance payment for his last official release before his untimely death after a heart attack in his home town of Indianapolis on 15 June1968 at the age of only 43. Track Listings 1. Wind Song 2. Georgia On My Mind 3. The Other Man's Grass Is Always Greener 4. Down Here On The Ground 5. Up And At It 6. Goin' On To Detroit 7. I Say A Little Prayer For You 8. When I Look In Your Eyes 9. Know It All 10. The Fox CALIFORNIA DREAMING - 180 GRAM LIMITED EDITION - As Wes Montgomery sailed into ever-poppier waters towards the end of his career, two things remained constant: he kept writing and including original tunes on his albums, and he kept playing and including the blues in one shade or another. Thus, on California Dreaming, another big band-orchestrated Verve album, we get "Sun Down," a six-minute original blues, cut for the most part with just the first-call rhythm section of Herbie Hancock, Richard Davis, Grady Tate and Ray Baretto. The original, "Mr. Walker," is just as cooking, and dates from Montgomery's second Riverside album, the aptly titled Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery. California Dreaming emphasizes groove tunes over ballads and keeps the pop challenges to a minimum. Track Listings 1. California Dreaming 2. Sun Down 3. Oh You Crazy Moon 4. More, More, Amor 5. Without You 6. Winds of Barcelona 7. Sunny (Alternate Take) 8. Sunny 9. Green Papers 10. Mr. Walker 11. South of the Border THESE 9 RIVERSIDE RELEASES FROM WES MONTGOMERY'S RIVERSIDE RECORDS YEARS GEORGE SHEARING AND THE MONTGOMERY BROTHERS - For Wes Montgomery, a principal benefit of his rise to fame was that it allowed him to work at times with his two brothers. This tight-knit family unit had many fans, but none more enthusiastic than Shearing, who sat in whenever possible and eventually was able to join them on record. The result was this once-in-a-lifetime blending of the differing approaches of two master melodists. Track Listings 1. Love Walked In 2. Love for Sale 3. No Hard Feelings 4. Enchanted 5. Stranger in Paradise 6. The Lamp Is Low 7. Double Deal 8. And Then I Wrote 9. Darn That Dream 10. Lois Ann 11. Mambo in Chimes INCREDIBLE JAZZ GUITAR - A dazzling display of the unorthodox technique and emotional power that combined to make Montgomery a literally incredible artist. Ever since its initial release in 1960, this album has been a consenus choice of musicians, critics, and knowledgeable listeners as a matchless example of the talents of one of the finest jazz instrumentalist of all times. Track Listings 1. Airegin 2. D-Natural Blues 3. Polka Dots and Moonbeams 4. Four On Six 5. West Coast Blues 6. In Your Own Sweet Way 7. Mr. Walker (Renie) 8. Gone With The Wind WES MONTGOMERY TRIO - DYNAMIC NEW SOUND - When Cannonball and Nat Adderley heard Wes Montgomery in an Indianapolis after-hours club in the fall of 1959, Cannonball decided that this remarkable talent had to be exposed to the world. He then not so much persuaded, as ordered, Riverside’s Orrin Keepnews to record Montgomery. Soon, Keepnews flew to Indianapolis, listened, and signed Montgomery before the night ended. At the age of 37, this mild, teetotaling father of six was on his way to becoming the most influential jazz guitarist since Charlie Christian. What we hear on this SACD of Montgomery’s first album is essentially what the Adderleys and Keepnews heard, Wes at the helm of his trio playing his thrilling, melodic single-note lines, revolutionary octaves and block chords. After 12 Riverside albums, Montgomery switched to another label and had huge commercial success. But it was during the Riverside period that he astonished the jazz world with his technique, musicianship and soul. This is the record that started it all. Track Listings 1. 'Round Midnight 2. Yesterdays 3. The End of A Love Affair 4. Whisper Not 5. Ecaroh 6. Satin Doll (take 5) 7. Satin Doll 8. Missle Blues 9. Missle Blues 10. Too Late Now 11. Jingles MONTGOMERY BROTHERS - GROOVE YARD - As youngsters back in Indianapolis, the three Montgomerys learned to play together. Monk and Buddy, the oldest and youngest, left home first to gain 1950s fame as the core of “The Mastersounds”; a few years later, when Wes was beginning to set the jazz world on its ear, they were again able to work as a unit. It was not a very successful venture, commercially speaking, but their few recordings give off a most noticeable sense of the pride and pleasure these brothers felt in being reunited. Track Listings 1. BOCK TO BOCK (BACK TO BACK) 2. GROOVE YARD 3. IF I SHOULD LOSE YOU 4. DELIRIUM 5. JUST FOR NOW 6. DOUJIE 7. HEART STRINGS 8. REMEMBER SO MUCH GUITAR - Wes Montgomery appeared as leader or co-leader on a dozen Riverside albums, in a wide variety of formats ranging from organ trios to one with full string orchestra. Some of the most rewarding simply placed him in a studio with a superior rhythm section and let him deal with a mixture of ballads, blues, and swingers. This album, his fourth for the label, is a notable example of this straightforward approach. It features the flawless support of Ron Carter (in one of his very first sessions) and Hank Jones, and includes Montgomery's only entirely unaccompanied recording: "While We're Young."  Track Listings 1. Twisted Blues 2. Cotton Tail 3. I Wish I Knew 4. I'm Just a Lucky So and So 5. Repetition 6. Somethin' Like Bags 7. While We're Young 8. One for My Baby (And One More for the Road) PORTRAIT OF WES - Wes Montgomery's last sessions for Riverside late in 1963 marked a return to the organ trio format he always enjoyed. But the results had not yet been issued when the company ceased operations. This LP released during a brief attempt to resume, was assembled without any input from either the artist or his producer. Thus the issued version of "Moanin'" was not one Wes liked and several liner credit errors went uncorrected [for example, the actual composer of "Lolita" is Barry Harris and the tune "Movin' Along" is an entirely different blues also written by Montgomery and later titled "Blues Riff"]. Nonetheless these are strong earthy performances in an always hard to find album that was only fleetingly available when originally issued. Track Listings Freddie the Freeloader Lolita Blues Riff Dangerous Yesterday's Child Moanin' MOVIN ALONG - When this album was made, Wes Montgomery was in the early rocket-like stages of a tragically brief career. His debut as a recording artist on Riverside had not come until he was in his mid-thirties (and he was to die of a heart attack within a decade). In the single year between his first and this–his third–LP, he had leaped to the top of all possible polls. But he was always highly critical of his own recorded performances, and many feel his studio work never quite equaled his on-the-job accomplishments. However, this relaxed "blowing date" (his principal backing comes from a trio then working together as his friend Cannonball Adderley's rhythm section) is considered perhaps his most successfully swinging visit to a recording studio. Track Listings Movin' Along Tune-Up (I Don't Stand A) Ghost of a Chance Sandu Body and Soul So Do It! Says You GUITAR ON THE GO - You hear music like this and you're not in the least surprised that, whatever he did before or afterward, Wes Montgomery never felt as much at home as when working this trio format. And they make you feel right at home with them, even now. The Wes Montgomery Trio makes most of what has passed for jazz in their time and beyond sound somewhere between self-congratulatory and shiftless. This group, almost as much as its guitarist and leader, was a blessing upon jazz. TRACK LISTINGS 1. Way You Look Tonight 2. Dreamsville 3. Geno 4. Missile Blues 5. For All We Know 6. Fried Pies FUSION WITH STRINGS - DO NOT be fooled by the title "Fusion", nor be put off by the strings. This is the very last of Wes' recordings for Riverside and it is five star all the way. The playing is somewhat 'future Wes', but this is a swinging session. Check out especially both takes of "Tune Up". On the alternate take, Wes misses an easy octave, plays 'Pop Goes The Weasel', shows his frustration, then proceeds to tear up the turnaround so deliciously with his phrasing and touch that it may be one of my top 5 Wes moments ever recorded. To this day, when Jimmy Ponder plays "Tune Up" it is this arrangement that he almost always chooses. These sessions are included on the "Complete Riverside Recordings" and were also released as a Milestone Records LP under the title "Pretty Blue" in 1974. I'll take that title over "Fusion" any day of the week. "Pretty Blue" is worth trying to find (if you have a turntable...) solely for the liner notes by Orrin Keepnews. Forget the title and enjoy the recording! MOVIN WES - HEAVY VINYL LIMITED EDITION Wes Montgomery demonstrates on his 1964 Verve debut album, Movin' Wes, just what fabulous sounds he coaxes from his instrument, no matter how he gets it done. Wes is accompanied here by a 12-piece mini-big band consisting of multi-reed man Jerome Richardson, a trumpet section consisting of Clark Terry and Basie veterans Ernie Royal and Snooky Young, trombonists Urbie Green and Jimmy Cleveland and a rhythm section of pianist Bobby Scott, bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Grady Tate. Wes shines like a diamond on show tunes "People" and "Matchmaker," moody Ellington chestnut "Caravan" and a handful of originals, forever reversing the old proverb: It ain't the way you do it, it's what you do. Rest assured, Wes Montgomery can do it.
