Made from soft meranti wood. The sape has quite an elongated body which is hollowed out and functions as a resonator. The shape of the body looks like a sampan/boat, often called 'the boat lute' in Western countries. Kayan and Kenyah tribes are mainly seen playing such instruments in Sarawak, Borneo. Originally , sape strings were made from the Sago tree but now these have been replaced by nylon strings. This is a 4 string sape, in 100% working order, used only before in a "Kumang" ceremony, I am confident this sape is finely tuned to play many proper and beautiful songs. Decorated with fine Dayak "Tree of Life" painting and a hornbill figure for the top finishing, this is a musical instrument for serious collectors!
