Description
Format: LP Genre: Rock Condition: record: VG+ sleeve: G *** Artist: The Who / Pete Townshend Title: Happy Jack Original USA Decca DL 4892 Mono LP (1966) AUTOGRAPHED! (Be sure to see all the photos below!) PRODUCT DESCRIPTION & NOTES: A highly unusual piece. A rare and desirable MONO copy of the band's second album (titled 'A Quick One' in the UK) and signed by band members Townshend and Entwhistle as well as long time early producer and manager Chris Stamp. The mono record is in the original Decca inner sleeve, and although the vinyl has some scratches to it and shows signs of being played, there are no deep scratches or marks or signs of abusive wear at all. It is a nice, strongly 'typical' VG+ album, perfect in itself for any collection. More than respectable. The jacket has a lot of wear issues, mainly on the seams. *** (See jacket rating above) The left seam is heavily torn, cracked and peeling, with most of 'Happy Jack' and the 'The Who' visible, but missing a 4" line of paper in the middle, and several other smaller gaps on the edge. That edge we would honestly grade as poor . The bottom and top seams show cracks and wear, but are not torn and are intact. We would grade them as VG-. The front cover (face) shows some ring wear but is otherwise in a typical VG+ condition (signs of wear, but no abuse). The back cover, to also standard grade it, shows some minimal ring wear where expected around the very top and very bottom edges, and some wear across the center. It has a few very small droplet sized stains by the right seam, and tiny initials 'C.B.' in ink in the very uppermost left corner. Again, a typical VG+ (signs of wear, but no abuse). Now... the interesting part...!! There are 3 autographs on the reverse (the back is a collage of black and white photos). All are signed in what appears to be a pink/reddish pink narrow tip felt pen. On the upper left corner is 'Chris Stamp, manager - ', in about 3/4" high letters, with manager over the words 'Happy Jack'. To the far right, to the right of his picture, is signed 'To Christi, John Entwhistle' with his signature being about 1-1/2" by 3" in size, broad stroked and readable. It is not what one sees from later-day or modern signings where the artist draws a first letter of a name and then a long harried line. On the lower left, below his picture, it is signed 'To Christi, Pete Townshend X.' . About 1-1/2" x 4", it is also a broad stroked signing with Townshend lettering very readable, as opposed to a fast 'line stroke'. In addition, it is signed with an X beneath it, and more unusual, an inverted V pointing up toward his photo as if to identify himself. The provenance of this item is as follows: We recently purchased this record at an estate sale in a large turn of the last century house, in a wealthy suburb west of Boston, Massachusetts. We were the first people to inspect what were 5 full U-Haul sized boxes of record albums, 98% rock and roll, with titles and labels from the mid 60's through the late 70's. Sadly, the condition of almost all the records and jackets was fair to poor. This was the best conditioned vinyl (!) and perhaps so because it was autographed and therefore not played and abused as the others. There were no other signed items in the collection, and it was not 'highlighted' - it was filed amid all the other albums. In describing the condition, we mentioned that there were tiny initials 'C.B.' on the upper left corner of the reverse. The 'C' would make sense to be 'Christi'. With the unusual detail of Chris Stamp's signature on it, and it being personalized, one might assume it was acquired at a concert, possibly back stage, and first hand. It is missing the other two band member's signatures. The actual date of the signings is not known, as Stamp was with the band through the early 70's. As we did not acquire this ourselves directly from the artist or a known trusted source, we can NOT guarantee the authenticity of the signatures, but can only state that our own research and detective work brings us to the conclusion and judgment that they are real. We are providing large and clear scans of the reverse signatures for inspection. (Fuller sized versions of these scans are available upon request.) Please note: We have used a scanner with 300 dpi resolution for the photos. There is some darkening and pinkish discoloration on parts of some the scans which is not reflective of the actual condition of the cover but of the imperfections in the scanner. As in any and all instances where one might have any doubt as to authenticity of handwriting, this item is being offered and sold ONLY as a guaranteed US mono pressed copy of The Who's 'Happy Jack', with conditions stated above. If you have any doubts or questions as to the authenticity of the handwritings, please bid on this only in its value to you as a collectable record. We would be happy to answer any and all inquiries personally.
