There have been so few vinyl LPs produced over the last 5 years that you should never pass up the opportunity to upgrade your collection. They're each very limited in their pressings and disappear with extraordinary quickness from the vinyl market. This causes prices to skyrocket because once they are gone, they are gone forever! Don't second-guess yourself with this chance to upgrade your collection because before you know it, the opportunity will have passed forever. 45 Speed SETS - 2 LPS Here's How it was done: Using only the original analog master tapes, the renowned team of Steve Hoffman & Kevin Gray remastered and cut all of the titles at AcousTech Mastering, which features a pure Class-A disc-cutting system. AcousTech is located at Record Technology, Inc. the plant where the vinyl was pressed. It is a tremendous sonic advantage to have the pressing plant plating department & mastering room in the same facility as Steve & Kevin could cut a lacquer and plated immediately. This prevents the degradation of the grooves in a lacquer which is very fragile to quick deterioration. And of course cutting at 45 speed is the audiophile choice for the highes quality. A 45-RPM record is sonically superior to a 33 1/3 variety because of a 35 percent reduction of groove curvature compared to a 33 1/3 cut.. It means that while you can't fit as much music into a 45, the undukations of the groove that your cartridge has to track are stretched over a longer distance. For these reissues, the music was displaced onto four sides, meaning each side contains about 10 minutes of music. This is the ultimate reissues. The only way you'll get closer to this classic music is to listen to the master tapes or have been in the studio with the artist originally during the actual session. WAY OUT WEST Mastered off the original two-track tape recorded with a tube AKG-C12 microphone on a tube Ampex 350 machine. Features Ray Brown on bass and Shelly Manne on drums. Over his long and distinguished career, Sonny Rollins has made many dozens of albums. Among those recorded during the fifties, Prestige's Movin' Out and Colossus, Blue Note's A Night at the Village Vanguard, Riverside's The Sound of Sonny, and Way Out West on Contemporary qualify as all-time Rollins classics. The session for Way Out West, Rollins' first ever in California, was called for 3 a.m. to accommodate everyone's busy schedules. Sonny, who could never be accused of overstatement, announced after four hours of recording: "I'm hot now." "Way Out West is a piano-less trio - another va-va-vivid Roy DuNann production - with Rollins spinning quirky geometric patterns through odd standards like 'I'm an Old Cow Hand.'" - Fred Kaplan, The Absolute Sound, December 2005 (included in Kaplan's "Best-Sounding Jazz LPs") CONTEMPORARY LEADERS Widely acknowledged as the most significant and accomplished tenor saxophonist in the world, Sonny Rollins's recording legacy is nothing short of extraordinary. Beginning as a sideman in the late-'40s, he worked with Charlie Parker, Fats Navarro, Bud Powell, Max Roach, Clifford Brown, Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, and Miles Davis. This was Sonny’s second Contemporary album and his second West Coast session, a year and a half after the historic Way Out West. Jazz labels acquire “personalities” not only from the musical tastes of the owner/recording director but also from the roster of musicians signed to the company. The “Contemporary Sound”— every bit as distinctive as the competing “Blue Note Sound,” “Prestige Sound,” and “Pacific Jazz Sound”— was largely a product of the work by Hampton Hawes, Barney Kessel and Shelly Manne, all of whom had won Down Beat awards for their respective instruments and recorded as “The Poll Winners.” Track Listings 1. I've Told Ev'ry Little Star 2. Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody 3. How High The Moon 4. You 5. I've Found A New Baby 6. Alone Together 7. In The Chapel In The Moonlight 8. The Song Is You his horn on his hip, is about as cool as it gets. PLUS 4 Although under Sonny Rollins' name, the quintet on this masterpiece is the Brown-Roach Quintet, featuring (as Pee Wee at Birdland would have it) "the trumpet sensation, Clifford Brown." Thankfully, Prestige recorded the group in March 1956 so that Rollins and Brown were captured ensemble. The record is brief, but important. The disc begins with Rollins' "Valse Hot" a jazz waltz that features fine solos by Rollins and Brown followed by Richie Powell on piano and a Max Roach drum solo. "Kiss and Run" features a fine Rollins solo and a driving virtuoso performance by Brown spurred by Roach's masterful drumming. The Powell solo is commanding and lyrical and the traded breaks by Rollins, Roach, and Brown are almost the equal of the dialog between Rollins and Brown that conclude this track. These interchanges are cause enough to own the disc. But the great stuff doesn't end there. "I Feel a Song Coming On" begins with a breakneck Rollins solo followed by Brownie at peak tempo and inventiveness. Max' solo is tasteful and explosive and there is another Rollins/Brown dialog that's quick and clean. "Count Your Blessings" features Rollins as a balladeer and it's apt testimony to the lessons that he had learned from Lester Young as well as Charlie Parker. Lyrical and inventive, it simply swings. The disc concludes with "Pent-Up House," a Rollins original that fairly explodes with improvisation and vitality. This was one of the great jazz groups which unfortunately ended with the untimely deaths of Powell and Brown TENOR MADNESS Tenor Madness is famous for its title piece, a celebrated collaboration and face-off of the leading new tenor saxophone stylists of the mid-1950s. In their only recorded meeting, Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane played the blues with, at and around one another in a prodigy of exhilaration and inventiveness. Their encounter exemplified the state of advanced modern tenor saxophone jazz improvisation and helped set standards toward which players of the instrument have strived for decades. The 45 SPEED sound brings their adventure into bold relief. In the rest of the album, Rollins used three standard songs and one of his compositions as vehicles for the rhythmic mastery and melodic invention that made him one of the most discussed young soloists in years. Rollins applied his rich, humorous, often quirky imagination to pieces that were familiar (“When Your Lover Has Gone”), unusual as jazz tunes (“My Reverie,” “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World”), and new (“Paul’s Pal”). Track Listings 1. My Reverie 2. Paul's Pal 3. The Most Beautiful Girl In the World 4. When Your Lover Has Gone 5. Tenor Madness ALSO INCLUDED IS THE TREMENDOUSLY RARE 1ST EDITION 45 SPEED 4 LP SET IN 180- GRAM FROM CLASSIC RECORDS Our Man In Jazz, a live recording that is very spontaneous but it's still accessible with classic RCA sound. "This 1961 session is a classic; equal parts cerebral and swinging, earthy and lyrical, a string of stunning solos and lush ensemble harmonies. Consider the band: Nelson on alto sax; Freddie Hubbard, trumpet; Eric Dolphy, flute; Bill Evans, piano; Paul Chambers, bass; Roy Haynes, drums - and the results exceed the possibilities. It may also be engineer Van Gelder's peak triumph. Each instrument is captured in its true tone, and when they all play together, the crisscrossing overtones blossom in the ambience." - Fred Kaplan, The Absolute Sound, December 2005 (included in Kaplan's "Best-Sounding Jazz LPs") Track Listings 1. Contributing artists: Paul Chambers, Percy Heath, Roy Haynes, Sonny Clark Producer: Orrin Keepnews Distributor: Dunhill Compact Classics Recording type: Studio Recording mode: Mono SPAR Code: n/a Album notes Personnel: Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone); Sonny Clark (piano); Percy Heath, Paul Chambers (bass); Roy Haynes (drums).Recorded at Reeves Sound Studios, New York, New York on June 11, 12 & 19, 1957. Originally released on Riverside (241). Includes liner notes by Orrin Keepnews. THE SOUND OF SONNY shows everything that makes Sonny Rollins one of the titans of the tenor saxophone. He has a tone which can evoke heart-rending passions with a smoothness just this side of Ben Webster. Add to that the man's warm and playful sense of humor, and you've got a sax that's every bit a full and well-rounded emotional being. Without ever cheapening humor into novelty, it's a staple of his persona. This time out he finds the wacky joy in playing "Toot, Toot, Tootsie" as if it's some kind of after hours national anthem (this is, after all the same man who recorded "I'm An Old Cowhand" on his WAY OUT WEST album). The session boasts a superlative rhythm section of Sonny Clark on piano, Paul Chambers or Percy Heath on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums--all stellar players of the post-bop era. THE BRIDGE On this BRIDGE recording, Rollins makes a shattering return from sabbatical. He is joined by the youthful Jim Hall, who makes a great partner. Symbolism and reality are often confused. So it is with the title of this Album for THE BRIDGE has many meanings in the life of Sonny Rollins. They range from the mistily symbolic to the total reality of one specific BRIDGE, a 1600 foot span over the East River connecting the New York boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Musically, the Album is a BRIDGE between Sonny Rollins who rose quickly to a position of top rank among the saxophonists of the post-bop era of Modern Jazz development in the fifties and the Sonny Rollins to be of the sixties. This is no idle puffing up of this Album’s significance for it bridges a very real gap over two years during which Sonny stopped appearing in public in order to study, try out ideas, and make the time to think about himself, his music, and the environment in which he played and lived. This Album is not only a historic moment but also a superlative example of why the many gifts of Sonny Rollins -- his firm roots, present accomplishment, and concentration on the future -- are his strongest musical characteristics. Thus, this Album is not only a bright BRIDGE from Sonny’s past to the present but a certain promise to the future as well. The Album includes Bob Crenshaw on Bass - Ben Riley and H.T. Saunders on Drums. The tracks are - WITHOUT A SONG - WHERE ARE YOU? - JOHN S. - THE BRIDGE - GOD BLESS THE CHILD - YOU DO SOMETHING TO ME. PLUS THESE ADDITIONAL 180 GRAM AUDIOPHILE MASTERPIECES ON IMPULSE - A persistently provocative set of standards: Sonny delivers along with Ray Bryant, Walter Booker, and Mickey Rokar. Track Listings 1. On Green Dolphin Street 2. Everything Happens to Me 3. Hold 'Em Joe 4. Blue Room 5. Three Little Words SAXOPHONE COLOSSUS One of the pivotal recordings in bringing about the widespread acceptance of Sonny Rollins as a major figure, Saxophone Colossus inspired critics to write scholarly analysis and fans to revel in the hard-swinging invention, humor, and tender-strength balladry. Up to this album, while most musicians recognized Rollins as one of the new influential forces in the jazz of the Fifties, most critics were carping at Rollins or damning him with faint praise. "St. Thomas," a traditional West Indian melody which Mal Waldron remembered as "The Carnival," was recorded by many artists after Sonny introduced it here, and it remains a jazz standard today. The contributions of Tommy Flanagan's elegant swing, Doug Watkins' steady lift and Max Roach's most musical accompaniment and soloing (hear "Blue 7") make this a landmark album. Mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray. Track Listings 1. Strode Rode 2. Blue 7 3. Moritat 4. St. Thomas 5. You Don't Know What Love Is ALSO INCLUDED - Sonny Rollins Quartet RARE BONUS - Quintet - Self Titled 10” Three LP Set – Self Titled "It is a readily acknowledged fact that Charlie Parker is one of the 'giants of jazz' and that his influence has been both powerful and wide in scope. While the most obvious example of this influence is the long list of alto men who play in his style, either directly or to a large degree, the 'school' of tenor players which stems from him is virtually unrecognized. There are Sonny Stitt and Jimmy Heath, both emigres from alto; Wardell Gray, originally influenced by Lester Young; and most important of all, Sonny Rollins." - from the original liner notes by Ira Gitler Track Listings 1. The Way You Look Tonight 2. I Want to be Happy 3. More Than You Know Quintet Once before, I was called on to write notes for a Sonny Rollins album (Prestige prLP 137). The sides were good and it would have been easy to go into ecstasies over Sonny's playing, but I had an idea that later in his career, Sonny was going to reach much greater heights and if an opportunity came to me at that time to write about his achievements, my words would seem empty. Well the time has come, and I can happily write that Sonny Rollins has come to the front as the most important reedman in the tradition of Charlie Parker. In his various appearances throughout 1954 with the groups of Art Blakey, Art Farmer, and his own quartet, Sonny was consistently proving this fact. Now as a testament to this year's accomplishments he has done his greatest set of recordings. Sonny will probably shake his head when he reads this and say, 'nothing was happening,' but his modesty is exceeded only by his talent. Not only does he have warmth and imagination, but when it comes to 'cookin' he parallels Charles of The Ritz. 'Cookin' is synonymous with 'swingin' or as Abdullah Buhaina puts it 'playin' like hell.' - from the original liner notes by Ira Gitler Track Listings 1. Silk N' Satin 2. Movin' Out 3. Swingin' for Bumsy 4. Solid Quartet "Every so often, musicians begin talking about one of their ranks who has captured their attention and imagination with his music. They travel to wherever he happens to be playing and absorb his offerings. In the past few years, musicians in New York (tenormen in particular) have been avidly listening to Walter Theodore Rollins, known to them as Sonny...Listen to the nuances in Sonny's phrasing, his interpretation of chord changes, his personal sense of time, and the emotions in his playing. He is certainly one of the musicians who is filling in another 'lick' in the 'giant pattern' of jazz." - from the original liner notes by Ira Gitler Track Listings 1. Time on My Hands 2. This Love of Mine 3. Shadrack 4. Slow Boat to China 5. Scoops 6. With a Song in My Heart 7. Newk's Fadeaway 8. SONNY ROLLINS - NUCLEUS This 1975 album by the man believed by many to be the modern titan of the tenor saxophone contains two pieces, "Azalea" and "Cosmet," that are among his best recorded solos of the Seventies. Both have suggestions of the Latin/Caribbean music of which Rollins is the acknowledged jazz master. Nucleus reflects Rollins' career-long dedication to exploring the frontiers of tonal possibility, including varied pitches and textures, all tied to his inexhaustible fund of rhythmic invention. The album also includes a new approach to "My Reverie," a piece Rollins had explored 20 years earlier. Track Listings 1. Lucille 2. Gwaligo 3. Are You Ready? 4. Azalea 5. Newkleus 6. Cosmet 7.
