Of course, the symphony is really more the orchestra's show than the organ's -- the organ has its splashy moments, but basically serves an obbligato rather than concertante function -- and the Philadelphia Orchestra has long been one of the most virtuosic "instruments" to record this score, through one monaural recording, two analogues (for CBS and RCA) and this final, early-digital rendering. The sleek, powerful strings, firm woodwinds, and full-bodied brasses all come up splendidly in Telarc's digital recording, which integrates Murray nicely into the overall sonic frame, and which reproduces brilliantly both in SACD and in plain frontal stereo. Originally the symphony -- thirty-four minutes and change in length -- appeared by itself on CD, most uneconomically, just as it did on LP (where issuing the symphony alone was more or less standard practice). Telarc has, most generously, filled out the program with another complete LP recital -- the Encores a la francaise program, featuring Murray in a real solo role.
