Description
George Szell conducting the Cleveland Orchestra "Live in Tokyo" in works by Weber, Mozart, Sibelius, and Berlioz on ULTRA RARE, OUT-OF-PRINT Sony Japan Super Audio SACD issue SRGR 747 from 2001. Single-layer stereo only. Recorded live on May 22, 1970, at Tokyo Bunkakaikan. Condition is pristine all over. Total timing is 83'39. Made in Japan. Contents: Carl Maria von Weber, "Oberon" overture Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Symphony No. 40 in G minor, K.550 Jean Sibelius, Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 43 Hector Berlioz, Rakoczy March from "The Damnation of Faust," Op. 24 So here's that crown jewel among classical SACD reissues: Szell and Cleveland caught in an evening of rare inspiration lifting the work of both the players and the sound engineers, conveyed better than ever in this Japanese remaster for SACD. One of the most vivid-sounding discs I've ever heard, both musically and sonically. And I shouldn't forget to mention the extraordinary verve, sense of purpose, and pacing skill with with Szell conducts the Sibelius 2 (all qualities very much necessary in Sibelius); possibly the best-ever Sib 2, say critics, and I rush to add that this beats Szell's studio take of the same, hands down. Moreover, you get Szell's paradigmatic Mozart recorded like nowhere else. Personally, I'm not such a fan of Szell, but rarely is the excitement of a special occasion transmitted through a musical recording the way it is here. The recording quality helps, it's really quite special: this is one of those very few that actually are imposing in your living room. AND this might well be your only chance ever to snap this out-of-print item on the rapidly shrinking SACD markets. Please Do Not Pay before Receiving My Invoice If You Win: I will ship worldwide but you should confirm with me the shipping costs before bidding, and at the very latest before paying, as costs may vary significantly depending on the shipping method selected, the country you live in, and the number & size of items purchased. For single-CD shipments, standard priority mail to Europe (EU) is $5 and to the U.S. $6.50 (not the $3 the formula forces me to enter for the listing). Other shipping methods include Registered Mail and Express Mail (which has tracking). (Cost calculator at http://www.posten.se/skickaguiden/main_do.jsp if you happen to have a friend who speaks Swedish.) To some destinations I will only ship Registered Mail or Express Mail to ensure delivery, and you will kindly understand that I may opt to do so at my discretion. Multiple items can be combined for lower postage fees, so let me know if you plan to bid on more items in case you win this disc. You will only pay for the actual cost of shipping. All items are shipped with the jewel cases included, as normal and unless otherwise requested.  Please email me with any questions. Please check my other items for similar listings in classical and jazz. Also check back in the coming days for additional listings I will be posting including: superior Japanese remasters (DSD and PCM), Japan-only editions, out-of-print SACD super audio discs, out-of-print papersleeve mini-LP editions, and other hard-to-find recordings and collector's items. All the items come from a one-owner, well-cared-for private collection. Thanks for looking!
