The younger Davies arguably invented heavy metal with his metallic, bar-chord-crunch guitar style and his brashness fueled the band's energetic live shows. This lively 1997 club show reinforces those notions, as Dave plows through 27 songs with a pace worthy of the Ramones. Smart enough not to let his tumultuous, decades-long rivalry with brother Ray get in the way of his taste, the younger Davies fills fully half of the set list with versions of his older brother's songs, be they familiar ("She's Got Everything," "All Day and All the Night," "You Really Got Me"), cult faves ("David Watts," "I'm Not Like Everybody Else"), or obscurities ("Look Through Any Doorway"). A handful of vintage covers pay homage to Davies's own musical roots, while his own songs stand in gutsy contrast to his elder brother's often ornate constructions, delivered in a voice that's reedier, but instantly familiar. Engaged in publishing in his post-Who semi-retirement, the windmilling guitarist has returned to the stage infrequently, which may partially explain the energy he brings to this performance, a benefit for a treatment center for abused children. The two-disc collection features Townshend backed by a quintet on one disc and stretching out with Eddie Vedder and keyboardist Jon Carvin on remakes of "Magic Bus" and "Heart to Hang Onto" on the second disc. Townshend scatters a couple of unexpected covers (Canned Heat's droning "On the Road Again" and Dylan's "Girl From the North Country") and a few more obscure originals ("Now and Then," "Drowned") among the staples ("Anyway Anyhow Anywhere," "Let My Love Open the Door," "Won't Get Fooled Again"). The original art punk now approaches his material with a certain mature reserve, but he's consistently engaged and in fine voice. Most of the subjects here are around the Apple Records time and John's relationship, personally and artistically, with Yoko Ono (one interview has John bristling when his and Yoko's cinematic work is compared to that of Andy Warhol!). John talks Sergeant Pepper, the creaion of "The Ballad Of John & Yoko," The Beatles relationship with keyboardist, Billy Preston and the future of the group as he saw it in the late sixties. Fascinating stuff for Beatlemaniacs! SONGS/TRACKS: 1) Introduction by the author 2) Throughout 1969 Lennon was extremely close with Apple man Derek Taylor. In this press conference you’ll hear both Derek and Yoko. 3) Lennon comments on the fallout of the Brain Epstein’s untimely death. 4) John reacts to the suggestion that he and Yoko’s avant garde films are painfully reminiscent of the cinematic work of Andy Warhol. 5) Back in 1969 John Lennon was even considered outrageous to the art world and quite regularly upset even the "anything-goes" avant garde. 6) Lennon sounds off on his views of Apple and the rather consistent problem of pulling any real money out of the film. 7) John describes the couple’s work as a kind of living diary of their unconventional life. 8) One of Lennon’s great priorities circa 1969 was working to expose the so called art myth, which is, that only very special, highly sophisticated people may participate in the creative process. 9) John discusses what’s up for the Beatles in ‘69. 10) To Lennon peace marches were old hat and his new Bed-in concept offered a fairly simple alternative for anyone who wanted to take part in this type of protest. He explains. 11) Controversial as their relationship was in the beginning, John was desperately in love with Yoko. He explains the unique attraction. 12) Here we learn how Yoko’s appearance in John’s life affected the leader of the Beatles. Lennon also comments about the future of the group. 13) Over and again John’s relationship with Yoko is a point of discussion, at least up to 1969. Lennon comments. 14) And what will become of the Beatles now that John is so otherwise preoccupied with his new wife.? He responds. 15) Ever since the Beatles laid down their instruments forever following their final performance at Candlestick Park in San Francisco in 1966, journalists bombarded them with questions about a public reunion. Here Lennon faces the controversy head on. 16) ‘Let it Be’ seemed to be both the best of times and worst of times for the Beatles. Lennon explains the fairly convoluted project. 17) John comments on the Beatles’ ever evolving style. 18) In this rare piece Lennon discusses the unexpected impact of ‘Sgt. Pepper’ and what it meant to him. 19) The Lennon’s second Bed In was held in Montreal, Canada on May 26, 19669. Much the same in content as the first, the only significant difference was the attendance of an array of celebrities matching wits with John and Yoko including cartoonist Al Capp, Tommy Smothers, Dr. Timothy Leary as well as the Montreal chapter of he Radha Krishna Temple. The Unquestionable highlight of the event was the communal recording of GIVE PEACE A CHANCE live from the bedroom. In this interview Lennon takes time out to preside over lively telephone press conference broadcast throughout North America. 20) One of those closest to the Beatles musically back in 1969 was keyboard legend Billy Preston who played with the group extensively during the ‘Let it Be’ sessions in London. When GET BACK was released it was promoted as “ The Beatles with Billy Preston” it became rather a point of controversy with the media and many fans. Longtime David Lynch musical collaborator Angelo Badalamenti seems the perfect scoring choice, and here he turns from his usual stark, brooding soundscapes to indulge in some jazzy lounge sleaze, music whose garish-yet-hollow nature seems to perfectly echo Crane's collapsing soul. Buster Poindexter imparts suitably reptilian charm to the composer's tone-setting "Snap" (with lyrics by Schrader), while the remaining source material veers from the '60s proto-garage psych-punk of the Count Five's "Psychotic Reaction" and the crude, rambunctious R&B of "Psycho" by the Sonics to kitschy, thematic chestnuts like the O'Kaysians' "(I'm a) Girl Watcher," Barbara Mason's "Yes I'm Ready," a lugubrious take on "It Ain't the Meat (It's the Motion)" by King Cotton, and even Clem Snide's obscure, alt-rock-oriented "A Song for Bob Crane."
