They’re hungry here and they churn out a scruffy version of the Buddy Holly hit, “Not Fade Away” and “Get Off Of My Cloud”. At the start, you have their trademark song “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction” which may rank right up there with The Beatles’ Hey Jude and Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven as being the greatest rock and roll song of all time. OUT OF OUR HEADS - In the few months since the release of NOW!, the Stone’s sound had grown harder; even a ballad like “That’s How Strong My Love Is” attains a rumble that’ll make you think a big truck is driving by your house. PEPPER’S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND. There was always a competition between the release of a Stones album and the release of a Beatles album as to what transition rock and roll was going to take with each one of their releases. On this Rolling Stones release, AFTERMATH, everyone was blown away by an 11-minute song called GOING HOME (was originally a 2-minute song but they started jamming in the studio and let it go on one take). If you were around during that era, no song on the radio was over 3 minutes and everybody would wait intently until 12 midnight when the FM stations would play this 11-minute song. This 11-minute song established a whole new gendre of long songs released on albums. The album starts off with Brian Jones opening PAINTED BLACK which remains a dark classic, more for its spooky sitar than for Jagger’s psychedelia. For the most part, earlier Stones records were 99% derivative of American Blues/RB. AFTERMATH changed all that with songs like STUPID GIRL - LADY JANE - DONCHA BOTHER ME - THINK - FLIGHT 505 - HIGH AND DRY - IT’S NOT EASY - I AM WAITING and the rock staple classic - UNDER MY THUMB making AFTERMATH one of the most musically colorful LPs The Stones ever recorded. Simply a cover to cover classic. HITMAKERS - THE STONES got their groove on early, making one of the few originals here, the blues pastiche “Little By Little”, a standout. The self-titled debut album by THE ROLLING STONES laid the blueprint for the next several releases of their career. They had a couple of original songs and a liberal dose of the hardcore rhythm and blues that made them the evil twins of The Beatles. The first three songs – Not Fade Away – Route 66 and I Just Want To Make Love To You (later made famous by Foghat) all show the raw energy of the band. “Tell Me” is a fine original composition – “I’m A King Bee” sets up Mick Jagger’s persona of the sexual lothario and “Carol” starts the trend of having a Chuck Berry cover on their first few albums. While taking on Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, Buddy Holly and Marvin Gaye on a debut album would rightfully have daunted many a young band, this bunch just rocks it all. Outside the general toughness of sound and the front-cover glares, there’s little of the bad ass attitude that would begin to define them with the next album. Jagger, Richards, Jones, Wyman and Watts are mainly about the music. It is a solid debut. METAMORPHOSIS - The first Stones out-takes collection album ever to be officially released.
