Description
From the All-Time Leader in the R&B Field ComesThe Big Ol' Box of '50's Doo Wop! Only Atlantic in Cooperation with Rhino and Collectors' Choice Music could pull off a compilation this incredible! Played twice, when duping to tape & when ripping to my computer. This two-volume, pristine compilation is a collection of 100 tracks by some of the greatest Doo Wop groups of all time... all exclusive Atlantic artists. These historic recordings have been remastered from original recordings produced by such masters as Ahmet Ertegen, Herb Abramson, Jerry Wexler, and Jesse Stone, among others on the Atlantic staff and loaded onto four cd's. Each volume contains 2 CD's plus a booklet telling the story of doo-wop and the seminal role Atlantic Records played in that story; how the compilation came to be; a description of the individuals involved and the creme-de-creme groups who are included in the compilation; and a discography. Here are a few choice quotes from the booklets: "Forty years after its official birth and naming, doo-wop is still going strong. You can hear it on radio and TV, and it is given prominent play in many motion pictures. Long after other pop culture "fads" have been consigned to the dust heaps and museums, this endearingly antiquated form of rock 'n' roll continues to draw smiles among people too young to remember it's heyday and nods of recognition from those proud folks(sic) who are old enough to say "I was there." [Note: I am one of those early and ever-loyal proud folk. I who remember vividly the sunny Saturday afternoon in November, 1964, when, in an empty parking lot at a local LaGrange, Georgia, drive-in beer-joint I proposed to my wife while the Drifters were belting out "Under The Boardwalk" from the out-of-doors juke box. Forty-four years later wonderful emotions swell up in my heart and soul when I hear that song.] "Doo-wop is urban folk music, and a creation of those Fabulous Fifties you hear so much about. In fact, it may have been the best part of that legandary decade. Musicologists don't pay much attention to it, but when they do, they consider it an offshoot of the birth of rhythm & blues in the late 1940's. Fans and scholars agree the firt practitioners of the genre were the Ravens and Orioles, and those groups got their inspiration from the Ink Spots and Mills Brothers, along with lesser-known groups such as the Delta Rhythm Boys and Charioteers. Although those artists worked their shows directly in the mainstream of pop music, the doo-woppers who followed borrowed heavily from their bag of vocal tricks, including prominent bass and high tenor lead singers." "From the beginning every Atlantic release was a work of art. The best musicians and music charts were used. Under the stern gaze of veteran musician and producer Jesse Stone, groups of rowdy teenagers from the mean streets were molded into professional singers, their natural singing talents channeled into that glorious blend of youth and magic called doo-wop. Atlantic had no time to spare for groups who would not rehearse and their home-grown songs were polished and perfected or they were given tunes by professional writers. If necessary, dozens of takes of a song were cut before the job was declared finished." "Other companies easily surpassed Atlantic in the sheer numbers of doo-wop records they put out, but Atlantic stuck with only the very few and the very best. So when you hear Atlantic vocal groups you hear songs of high quality by singers who can really sing, recorded with impeccable musicality and production values. And that's why Atlantic is still making music today, nearly 50 years later, when hundreds of other companies have fallen by the wayside. When Atlantic did it, they did it best, no matter what it was.""The jewels in Atlantic's vocal group crown were the Clovers, Drifters and Coasters - no others were needed to sustain the company throughout the doo-wop years and a little beyond. Together, these three mighty groups racked up 61 R&B hits and 49 entries on the pop side of the ledger... " "Behind these stars and chart-makers were the other Atlantic groups, some elegant and polished, others more firmly connected to the street corners and other urban delights - but all of them superb examples of wondrous diversity of vocal group harmony." "... The big ones - "Money Honey", "Sh-Boom", "One Mint Julep" and more - are here because they're so good they can stand repeated playing 40 years after they were recorded, and were so much a part of Atlantic's success story in the '50's. So too the most sought after cuts by Atlantic's "second tier" groups like the Cardinals, Diamonds, Royal Jokers and Sensations. And last but certainly not least, the reason why I used the word 'finally' at the top: we finally found a place to issue some unreleased gems we've been sitting on for a couple of years now..." Take it from an old audiophile who has been a lover of doo-wop since it's inception... like blues and soul, I just can't get enough of doo-wop!!!!... this is one of the greatest compilations of doo-wop to ever come along. Truly a Big Ol' Box chock full of the best doo-wop sounds around. We owe a big Thank You to the teams at Atlantic, Rhino and Collector's Choice who made this compilation possible! Let's Be Lovers Starglows So there you have it... 4 CD's chock full of the best Doo-Wop ever assembled. And if that doesn't satiate your appetite for Doo-Wop [which I predict it most certainly will not], I offer five other doo-wop CD's from my personal collection: 1.) Buck Ram's Doo Wop includes seminal 1950s and early 1960s doo-wop produced by Buck Ram, famous for inventing the hit-making sound of the Platters. It includes recordings by The Flairs, The Colts, The Jewels, The Chesterfields, The Peppers and much, much more. . 2.) The Platters: The Great Pretender presents ten of these giant doo-wop artists greatest hits. They were responsible for one of the mid-50's mega-hits, My Prayer, that launched the Rock 'n' Roll era. 3.) The Orioles: Crying In The Chapel is another 'best of' CD that in addition to the title song blockbuster, contains "C.C. Rider", "Tell Me So", "Masquerade", "Chapel In The Moonlight", "Baby, Please", "Miss You So", "Secret Love" and "It's Too Soon To Know". 4.) From the vaults of Imperial, Show Biz adn Rip Records comes Bobby Mitchell & The Toppers: I'm Gonna Be A Wheel Some Day. During the decade beginning in 1953 and winding up in 1963, this group recorded these 18 songs, starting with "I'm Crying"(1953); to "I'm Gonna Be A Wheel Some Day"(1957); deciding "I Don't Wanna Be A Wheel No More"(1960); and winding up with "Just Say You Love Me"1963).5.) The Larks: My Reverie (part 1) is one of two CD's covering this group's two year carreer with Apollo Records. The two CD's also include the best of the recordings of the second 1954 Larks, also led by Gene Mumford, who waxed their sides for Apollo's pop-oriented Lloyds label subsidiary. 6.) The 5 Red Caps captures the 1943-45 performances of this early group who are representative of the vocal (and instrumental) groups who were the progenitors of doo-wop... along with the Mills Brothers and the Inkspots... and, later, The Dominoes, Billy Ward & The Midniters; the Spiders; etc. I have decided to sweeten the pot further by adding a canned collection of #1 Hits of the 50's and 60's to the offer. A 2006 release from Madacy Entertainment this collection contains three discs with 12 fabulous #1 songs each. They are: Disc One:Rock Around The Clock Bill Haley & The CometsWake Up Little Susie The Everly BrothersTwilight Time The PlattersStagger Lee Lloyd PriceYakety Yak The CoastersSinging The Blues Guy MitchellKansas City Wilbert HarrisonAll I Have To Do Is Dream The Everly BrothersSmoke Gets In Your Eyes The PlattersHeartaches By The Number Guy MitchellTom Dooley Kingston TrioTequila The Champs Disc Two:Stay Maurice WilliamsSave The Last Dance For Me The DriftersGeorgia On My Mind Ray CharlesCathy's Clown Everly BrothersThe Lion Sleeps Tonight The TokensDuke Of Earl Gene ChandlerPeppermint Twist Joey Dee & The StarlightersHe's A Rebel The CrystalsSheila Tommy RoeTelstar The TornadosMy Guy Mary WellsLeader of the Pack The Shangri-las Disc Three:Game Of Love Wayne FontanaThis Diamond Ring Gary Lewis & The PlayboysI'm Telling you Now Freddie & The DreamersMrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter Herman's HermitsWhen A Man Loves A Woman Percy SledgeWild Thing The TroggsSunshine Superman DonovanCherish The AssociationWinchester Cathedral New Vaudeville BandWindy The AssociationI Heard It Through The Grapevine Marvin GayeDizzy Tommy Roe There is also a 14-page booklet that discusses each of the songs and performing artists.
