Description
We now have hundreds of programs and Thousands of episodes . This Time...... OLD TIME RADIO PRESENTS "ULTIMATE SUSPENSE" 5 DISC SET ****** Some of these programs were recorded in the early 1930's and 1940's so the sound may not be state of the art that we know today. That is part of the charm of these programs in that what you are hearing is the same thing that people heard when they tuned into these programs. These programs are a part of our country history known as "The Golden Age of Radio". A great number of episodes of these programs have been lost, never to be reproduced, and we do not want to see any more programs disappear. Please join us in perserving this portion of Americana so is doesn't disappear completely. Thank you for looking. Happy Bidding. ****** You may be able to find MP3 discs for less and we could offer ours for less also if we were to cut costs. We could write the title of the program on the disc but we prefer to have a picture lable with the title of the program printed on it; We could put the CD in a paper or plastic sleeve but, again, we prefer to use a quality, sturdy plastic jewel case for each Cd.; we also prefer to use a picture for the jewel case along with a booklet listing the episodes on the CD. We enjoy what we do and we appreciate the friends we have made here on Ebay over the years and we pride ourselves on offering quality products so that is what we will keep producing. Suspense, one of the premier drama programs of the Golden Age of Radio, was subtitled "radio's outstanding theater of thrills." It was heard on CBS from 1942 through 1962. Approximately 945 episodes were broadcast during its long run, and more than 900 are extant in mostly high-quality recordingsSuspense went through several major phases, characterized by different hosts, sponsors and director/producers. There were a few rules which were followed for all but a handful of episodes: Protagonists were usually a normal person suddenly dropped into a threatening or bizarre situation. Evildoers must be punished in the end. The program made only occasional forays into science fiction and fantasy. Among its science fiction entries were "The Man who Tried to Save Lincoln" (a time travel fantasy) and an adaptation of Curt Siodmak's Donovan's Brain, as well as an adaptation of an H. P. Lovecraft short story, "The Dunwich Horror". In the early phase, the program was hosted by "The Man in Black" (played by Joseph Kearns or Ted Osborne) and many episodes written or adapted by the prominent mystery author John Dickson Carr. Escape was a similar anthology thriller and suspense program. Both occasionally adapted the same stories, though Escape had lower budgets--and thus, fewer sound effects and name actors. The sponsor became Roma Wines and then Autolite Spark Plugs; eventually Harlow Wilcox (of Fibber McGee and Molly) became the pitchman. William Spier, William N. Robson, and Anton M. Leder were among the producers and directors. The program's heyday was in the early 1950s, when radio actor, producer and director Elliott Lewis took over (still during the Wilcox/Autolite run). Here the material reached new levels of sophistication. The writing was taut, and the casting, which had always been a strong point of the series (featuring such film stars as Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten, Henry Fonda, Humphrey Bogart, Ronald Colman and Cary Grant), took an unexpected turn when Lewis expanded the repertory to include many of radio's famous drama and comedy stars - often playing against type - such as Jack Benny and Jim and Marian Jordan of Fibber McGee and Molly. The final broadcasts of Suspense and Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar on September 30, 1962, are often cited as the end of the Golden Age of Radio. The series expanded to television with the Suspense series on CBS from 1949 to 1954. For the Poway Performance Art Company, the 70-year-old San Diego actor-director Robert Hitchcox recently mounted a stage production recreating Suspense, complete with commercials, in a stage set designed like a CBS radio studio These early radio presentations are true American treasures and are must listening to for anyone who grew up in that era. For those a bit younger, it is a window into how your parents and grandparents entertained themselves. Remember, this was the time before most folks had a TV. Before the days of video games, shopping malls, MTV, and the Internet, families used to sit in their living room each night to listen to radio shows such as Superman, Groucho Marx, The Avenger, Gunsmoke, Sherlock Homes, and many others. When TV become popular in the 1950's, most of these shows went off the air, but they now live on at websites such as this one and on weekly nostalgia radio broadcasts worldwide. These shows, which are in the Public Domain, are very difficult to find. After a title search of the Library of Congress Copyright records, no copyright exists on this material; therefore making these programs Public Domain. This material does not violate any copyright laws, and is in compliance with Ebay's policies regarding Public Domain material.     DISC 1   1 The Lodger   2 Burning Court 06/17/1942 3 Wet Saturday
