That is part of the charm of these programs in that what you are hearing is the same thing that people heard when they tuned into these programs. These programs are a part of our country history known as "The Golden Age of Radio". A great number of episodes of these programs have been lost, never to be reproduced, and we do not want to see any more programs disappear. We could write the title of the program on the disc but we prefer to have a picture lable with the title of the program printed on it; We could put the CD in a paper or plastic sleeve but, again, we prefer to use a quality, sturdy plastic jewel case for each Cd.; we also prefer to use a picture for the jewel case along with a booklet listing the episodes on the CD. Dragnet was a long-running, thirty-minute radio and television police procedural. It featured actual cases taken from the files of the Los Angeles Police Department. Jack Webb directed Dragnet and also played Detective Sergeant Joe Friday, the star of the show, who had remained a bachelor and still lived at home with his mother. It was one of the first radio shows to break the silence against dramatizing sex crimes and child murders. The show takes its name from an actual police term, a "dragnet", meaning a system of coordinated measures for apprehending criminals or suspects. It was first broadcast on June 3rd 1949, and last broadcast on February 26th 1957. Jack Webb and Barton Yarboroug made up the cast. Episodes began with announcer George Fenneman intoning the series opening ("The story you are about to hear is true; only the names have been changed to protect the innocent.") and Hal Gibney describing the basic premise of the episode and telling us the fate of the suspect at the end of the episode. The famous theme, Dragnet March was written by Walter Schumann. The now-defunct Fatima brand was the primary sponsor of the early Dragnet radio episodes. In fact, Jack Webb was in an advertisement for Fatima Cigarettes, ca. 1951. Dragnet debuted inauspiciously. The first several months were bumpy, however, when Dragnet hit its stride, it became one of radio’s top-rated shows. Webb was a stickler for accurate details, and Dragnet used many authentic touches. While most radio shows used one or two sound effects experts, Dragnet needed five; a script clocking in at just under 30 minutes could require up to 300 separate effects. The file format is MP3, which should be playable on any CD player which accepts the MP3 format; on any computer with an MP3 player such as Windows Media Player or the Mac equivalent; and any portable MP3 player. Also, we've found that many DVD players will play MP3 files. The individual episode files have been left accessible so that they can be transferred to portable devices for your convenience.
