Description
"THERE MUST BE A BETTER WAY". Fantastic Box Set of Memorabilia and Music from the first six Knebworth Festivals held from 1974-1979. The Promoter of these events, Freddy Bannister, assembled a Limited Edition Box Set which contains the following 67 Separate Items : - 43 Colour & Black & White Photographs - each 8" x 6" and professionally printed on glossy photo stock paper (There is a list of the photos as well, giving details, where known, of the artists performing, or the Festival crowds gathering, enjoying themselves (sunbathing naked &c.) and other aspects of the 6 Festivals). Most are B & W but there are a fair number of colour photos. All are housed in a custom-made blue card box (sturdy) lettered in silver. Many of the photos are previously unpublished ! - Six (6) Full colour facsimile Programmes for each Festival - each A4 sized (210 x 297mm or @ 8.5" x 12"). Each faithfully repruduced in colour and black & white from original programmes and substantial in content about e.g. the bands performing, photographs, ads and all the 'usual' material that went into the rather-better-produced programmes we get THESE days !! These are superb ! (As is the rest of the box set). Housed in a custom-made folder/pocket of thick card fastened by velcro and in blue lettered in silver. I've seen some of these programmes (and other parts of the set) advertised as ORIGINAL in various collectors' magazines (and on eBay). - Six (6) Full colour facsimile flyers/posters for each Festival (see photos). These vary slightly in size but are mostly A4 (210 x 297mm) and beautifully reproduced - at present you can buy (on eBay) individual posters (marked as "Facsimiles") for $ 20 + $ 11 post EACH !!! The posters are housed in a separate custom-made foleder the same as for the Programmes above. - Six (6) Facsimile Tickets for bands performing and for entrance to the Fair itself e.g. - Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, "Knebworth Fair", "Knebworth : A Midsummer Night's Dream", Frederick Bannister's "Bucolic Frolic" (the FIRST Festival, I believe) and and An Artist Guest Pass for Knebworth '78. All are on good stock paper/card except the last which is on a material-faced paper like most backstage passes (those peel and stick jobs that last time I wore one, nearly ruined a £ 600 suede jacket !!! - The glue !!!). These are in a plastic wallet. - A 55-minute VHS Video tape entitled "The Spirit of Knebworth" containing (I assume) clips from the various bands and artists performing at different Festivals. This slots into the overall custom-made blue and silver outer box which is constructed in such a way as to keep everything neat and in place without everything 'jiggling around' loosely. - A book entitled "There Must Be A Better Way" written by Freddy Bannister about the history of the Festivals, anecdotes from the Festivals, &c. and containing many black and white full page photographs of artists at the Festivals, plus "paperwork" relating to the Festivals &c. reproduced - Quotations, Contracts and suchlike, which give an Excellent insight into the machinations of organising such huge Festivals, the logistics involved &c. Also included are the Artists' Set Lists for each Festival ! Some are phemonenally long sets ! (The relevant dates are also listed). The book is a blue cloth hardback lettered in silver and black (the recurring theme of the various protective boxes and sleeves). NO dustwrapper was issued. The book bears a certificate on the front pastedown - inside front cover - a full sized page vertifying the Edition, numbering this set and signed by Freddy BBannister. In addition he has written - at my request - "To Paul - 'Rock On' - Freddy Bannister" (see last photo). ALL of the Contents are housed in a heavy-duty blue card custom-made box measuring overall 27 x 38 x 7.5 centimetres (approximately, or roughly 10.7" x 15.5" x 3") with a lid. Inside the lid is a FURTHER Signed Certificate describing the set as a "Commemorative boxed set". The Signature is again by Bannister (see photo 9). ALL of the Contents are Mint and Unopened/Unread - the ONLY damage is the very SLIGHTEST of darkening to the edges of the outside protective box itself where it was stored in a Summer House used by smokers. I have had the set some years and had meant to actually READ the book and LOOK at the programmes &c. - The posters are entirely suitable for framing &c. I like especially, the way that such care has been taken to preserve each set of Programmes, posters, photos and so on in it's own folder (heavy duty). The makers of this set it SEEMS were overly optimistic about Sales and although it's designated the Number 681, it is almost certainly NOT the 681th copy to have been sold. As memory serves me, as an added 'lure', the Promoter's Wife (? She who took the orders by 'phone) ofered a BONUS of FIVE Compact Discs taken FROM the Festivals. I had a choice of several and chose CDs of the following (which DO accompany the Set) : - The Allman Bros (Knebworth, 20th July 1974) (Two discs with 16 tracks) - Pink Floyd : "Trouble In Knebworth" (1975) (Three discs with an unspecified number of tracks, though the BOOK lists a set of 16 tracks and apparently, this show was the first show EVER at which "Shine On You Crazy Diamond/Have a Cigar" was performed - Roy Harper also joined Floyd for a duet on "Have A Cigar") A total of FIVE (5) bonus compact discs - the Copyright is dubious to my mind but since the Promoters issued them as an INCENTIVE to buyers, they must surely have cleared it with the Group and the PRS ?!! OTHER CDs of the shows were avalable. The CDs are CD-R discs without printed labels and have 'home-made' inserts (which are quite well done). I can't state the SOUND quality as again, I have never played even 10 seconds of one. For the sake of completeness, the Artists performing at Knebworth in 1974 to 1979 included The Allman Bros, Genesis, Frank Zappa, The Tubes, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, The Doobie Bros, van Morrison, The mahavishnu Orchestra, The Alex Harvey Band, Tim Buckley, Steve Miller band, Roy Harper, Captain Beefheart, Linda Lewis, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jefferson Starship, New Barbarians and most notably - Led Zeppelin, who played a BLINDING and long set. A FEAST of Memorabilia !!! Originals of even tickets fetch hundreds at times, original programmes are scarce and original posters you'd probably have to go to auction to bankrupt yourself over ! As stated, the Box Set did not APPEAR to have sold well and the makers have given up advertising it. For all I know they may have cut their losses and 'junked the product' (Most Publishers of books and CD box sets only have a certain number of copies printed/produced until demand is established - as a Bookseller I can tell you this frrom experience - NO-ONE can afford to speculate on any BOOK at least, and a collegaue who produced a £ 200 Limited Edition book actually threw 300 sets of sheets away and didn't have them bound as he knew that after press slaggings, sales would not exceed 200 at most - he lost £ 1000s as a result but would've lost FAR MORE if he'd had all 500 sets bound initially. One of my OWN books I had 1,000 copies printed of (a facsimile of a rare book) and recently "remaindered" over 600 copies, though broke even and indeed, made a reasonable profit). I have noticed SINGLE ITEMS from this scarce box listed on eBay at $ 20-30 (more even) such as single programmes (admittedly stated "Facsimile") and I worked out that by sellng each item individualy, I could net around $ 800+ if I were to do the same ! I'm not PREPARD to do so (unlessthis set doesn't sell !). DO remember that you are getting EVERYTHING listed (and more ! The CDs weren't originally part OF the set and are a great bonus). ALSO NOTE that everything is MINT except the outer box which is NEAR MINT. A fabulous gift fo yourself or any Festival Going Fan (especially older ones !). Please ask ALL quetions as soon as possible and NOT at the last second as I am often away from my PC for a day or two at a time .... I will Ship WORLDWIDE and charge at COST, without 'loading' the price just to make a few quid extra. My Feedback is 100% Positive so let's try and keep it like that ! I also PACK well - after 20 years of sending books around the globe - often priced in 5 figures - I DO know how to parcel things so as NOT to be damaged. Weight is 3.1 kilos - add approximately a kilo for wrapping and use www.royalmail.com to work out an appropriate shipping method to where you are. I advise Insurance also - a few bucks extra is worth the peace of mind ! (So, bank on say, 4 kilos + $ 10 insurance, roughly). NOTE !!!!! IF $ 1.00 appears as Postage costs on item description, please IGNORE it - I can't get my head round eBay's various rates ! POSTAGE IS CHARGED AT COST AND NOT - I REPEAT NOT - One dollar ! I hope I've answered most of your questions and the photos are helpful ! Happy Bidding ! Paul
