The tenor sax giant had signed with another label when he embarked on this one-off date for Blue Note, an excursion that paid off with an enduring modern jazz masterpiece. Boasting volley after volley of smart soloing and intuitively swinging rhythm work, BLUE TRAIN is a joy, from the coolly precise ensemble entry on the opening title piece through the sets balance of elegant hard bop conversations and smooth downshifts into ballads. John Coltrane wrote four originals, all of them now regarded as standards, and assembled a rhythm section including pianist Kenny Drew, Miles Davis rhythm section of bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones, and trumpeter Lee Morgan and trombonist Curtis Fuller. Coltrane's signature sound, now fully developed but still hewing more to familiar blues and chromatic harmonies than his later modalities, is confident and expansive, and his partners respond vividly throughout. Tracks include: Blue Train  > Moments Notice > Locomotion > I'm Old Fashioned > Lazy Bird.  THE SECOND PART OF THIS COLLECTION HAS THESE 45 SPEED 180 GRAM DOUBLE LP SETS - ALL LIMITED TO 1000 PIECES - SOME WENT IMMEDIATELY OUT OF PRINT. HERE'S HOW IT'S DONE: Using only the original analog master tapes, the renowned team of Steve Hoffman & Kevin Gray remastered and cut all of the titles at AcousTech Mastering, which features a pure Class-A disc-cutting system. AcousTech is located at Record Technology, Inc. the plant where the vinyl was pressed. It is a tremendous sonic advantage to have the pressing plant plating department & mastering room in the same facility as Steve & Kevin could cut a lacquer and plated immediately. This prevents the degradation of the grooves in a lacquer which is very fragile to quick deterioration. And of course cutting at 45 speed is the audiophile choice for the highes quality. A 45-RPM record is sonically superior to a 33 1/3 variety because of a 35 percent reduction of groove curvature compared to a 33 1/3 cut.. It means that while you can't fit as much music into a 45, the undukations of the groove that your cartridge has to track are stretched over a longer distance. For these reissues, the music was displaced onto four sides, meaning each side contains about 10 minutes of music. This is the ultimate reissues. The only way you'll get closer to this classic music is to listen to the master tapes or have been in the studio with the artist originally during the actual session. JOHN COLTRANE  & THELONIOUS MONK When Monk and Trane spent six months of 1957 working together at New York's Five Spot Cafe, it was an historic event which certainly should have been exhaustively recorded. But nonmusical conflicts made that impossible, leaving as the only permanent reminders of this momentous encounter the three remarkable quartet selections that highlight this album. Track Listings 1.   Ruby, My Dear 2.   Trinkle, Tinkle 3.   Off Minor (stereo) 4.   Nutty 5.   Epistrophy (stereo) 6.   Functional JOHN COLTRANE - SETTIN THE PACE Coltrane does not do the old Dexter Gordon/Leo Parker duet number, “Settin’ the Pace,” in this set. The overall title merely refers to his preeminence in the jazz world at the time the recording was released in the early Sixties. Recorded in 1958, this session comes from a time when Trane had already played in the Miles Davis quintet and the Thelonious Monk quartet and was frequenting Rudy Van Gelder’s New Jersey studio in recording situations backed by the Red Garland Trio. This threesome — Garland, Paul Chambers and Arthur Taylor — was a Prestige entity on its own, but had already released such albums with Coltrane as Traneing In and Soultrane. Settin’ The Pace, with its heady combination of seldom-done pop material and Jackie McLean’s intriguing “Little Melonae,” continued the excellent quartet series at a time when Trane was making jazz history at the head of yet another powerful foursome. Track Listings 1. I See Your Face Before Me 2. If There Is Someone Lovelier Than You 3. Little Melonae 4. Rise JOHN COLTRANE - SOULTRANE This album continued the reinforcement of Trane's importance as a stylist. As in Coltrane and John Coltrane and the Red Garland Trio, his first two albums as a leader for Prestige, the material in Soultrane is away from the ordinary. The Garland-Paul Chambers-Arthur Taylor rhythm section is a perfect accompanying unit for Trane who, by this time, was acknowledged to be-along with Sonny Rollins-one of the two most influential tenor saxophonists in jazz. "...SoulTrane finds him applying his 'sheets of sound' style to standards, in a more upfront sound." - Fred Kaplan, The Absolute Sound, December 2005 (included in Kaplan's "Best-Sounding Jazz LPs") Track Listings 1.   Good Bait 2.   I Want To Talk About You 3.   You Say You Care 4.   Theme For Ernie 5.   Russian Lullaby JOHN COLTRANE & KENNY BURRELL One of those rare combinations that occur only in the recording studio happened between John Coltrane and Kenny Burrell in 1958. The rhythm team of Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb, who were with the Miles Davis quintet, was enhanced by the suave, swinging piano of Tommy Flanagan, at that time solidifying his growing reputation on the New York scene. This is the one-time chemistry of Burrell and Coltrane, the blend of guitar and tenor saxophone in a mix of originals and standards; one of the latter, “Why Was I Born,” is a duet for the two principals. Track Listings 1. Freight Trane 2. I Never Knew 3. Lyresto 4. Why Was I Born 5. Big Paul  JOHN COLTRANE - LUSH LIFE John Coltrane’s Prestige years began when he joined the Miles Davis Quintet in 1955. During the next few years, when he was either with Davis or the Thelonious Monk Quartet, he functioned as both leader and sideman for this label. These recordings document the first part of his relatively short but highly influential time in the spotlight. Lush Life, a combination of standards and a blues, treated in the unique Coltrane manner — sound wedded to material in a completely personal way — contains three tracks without a piano. This is the first time he recorded in this manner, other than when Monk was “strolling,” and it offers another aspect from, and of, Trane. Track Listings 1.   Like Someone In Love 2.   I Love You 3.   Trane's Slo Blues 4.   Lush Life 5.   I Hear a Rhapsody JOHN COLTRANE – STANDARD COLTRANE 45 RPM SEALED 2 LP SET LIMITED EDITION NUMBERED.  John Coltrane brought a new sound and style to jazz, and he applies it in his own unique way to the standard material of the storehouse of American music gathered from Broadway, Hollywood, and Tin Pan Alley. With the excellent rhythm team of Red Garland, Paul Chambers (both of whom had done so many concert, club and recording dates with him) and Jimmy Cobb, and the Miles-directed flugehorn of Wilbur Harden. Trane puts his personal stamp on numbers not done that often: Henry Nemo's "Don't Take Your Love From Me" and Fred Ahlert's "I'll Get By," and two more familiar yet still not overdone songs, Richard Rodger's "Spring Is Here" adnd Bronislau Kaper's "Inivation." Recording enginneered by Rudy Van Gelder. Track Listings 1.   Don't Take Your Love From Me 2.   I'll Get By (as long as I have you) 3.   Spring is Here 4.   Inviation  THE THIRD PHASE TO THIS COLLECTTION ARE THESE RARE 180 GRAM SINGLE LP PRESSINGS. The 1965 Half Note recordings, taken from late-night radio broadcasts and until now available only as inferior-quality bootlegs, have long had legendary status among aficionados – especially the extended performance of “One Down, One Up,” regarded by many as one of Coltrane’s greatest recorded improvisations.
