New Listing 6 CD LOT FOLK All CDs in this lot are new and still sealed! *JUNE CARTER CASH Wildwood Flower (Dualtone 2003 - New & Sealed CD - There is a small drill hole in the jewel case) This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Released shortly after June Carter Cash's death in 2003, WILDWOOD FLOWER features the country music legend's most personal, intimate music. Recorded with relatives ranging from her cousins Janet and Joe Carter (the children of A.P. and Sara Carter) to granddaughter Tiffany Anastasia Lowe (the daughter of Carlene Carter and Nick Lowe) to, of course, her husband Johnny Cash, these 13 songs have the casual, almost spontaneous quality of a family sing-along. This feeling is heightened by both the snatches of conversation between the tracks and the song selection itself, taken almost entirely from the A.P. Carter songbook. That feeling of direct lineage colors the entire record; not only are these among the finest and most archetypal country songs ever written, they're also, in a very real way, family heirlooms, no less so than a treasured photograph or piece of jewelry. As a result, listening to WILDWOOD FLOWER is akin to being present at a particularly intimate, heartwarming family gathering. 4 stars out of 5 - ...Fittingly, she says goodbye with a lovely bouquet of songs....The album's pristine, spare sound emphasizes Norman Blake's masterful picking, daughter-in-law Laura Cash's haunting fiddle and June's signature autoharp strum... While there's nothing slick about December's Child, the melodic warmth of material such as "Still We Have a Friend in You" and "Back to the Old Homeplace" has an almost spiritual glow to it, while the album's arrangements employ trumpet, fiddle, piano, wah-wah guitar--and even doo-wop harmonies--to seemingly organic effect. Uptempo fare such as "How Can I Send Tonight (There to Tell You)" and "Climb These Steps (We Will)" recall the reedy-voiced yearning of Olson's Jayhawks days, while "Say You'll Be Mine" reunites him with former bandmate Gary Louris. The closing "One-Eyed Black Dog Moses" is a hoot, with a hypnotically funky groove that has Williams pushing her vocals to cartoonish extremes. SONGS/TRACKS: 1. How Can I Send Tonight (There To Tell You) 2. Still We Have A Friend In You 3. Alta's Song 4. Back To The Old Homeplace 5. December's Child 6. Nerstrand Woods     7. Cactus Wren 8. Climb These Steps (We Will) 9. How Can This Be     10. Say You'll Be Mine 11. One Eyed Black Dog Moses File Under: Alt Country, Folk - Keyword: Jayhawks, Victoria Williams * JOAN OSBORNE How Sweet It Is (Compendia 2002 - New & Sealed CD) Review: With the proliferation of earthy rock chicks such as Vanessa Carlton and Michelle Branch, it might seem like an opportune time for Joan Osborne, who gathered Grammy nominations for her triple-platinum 1995 debut Relish and its breakthrough single "One of Us," to revive her flowing blues-and-folk roots. Rather than take the anticipated path, however, the New York singer offers a twist. Taking a page from Ally McBeal's resident torch singer Vonda Shepard, Osborne turns in an album of stylish covers of contemporary R&B classics. She wraps her husky voice around a supper-club version of Otis Redding's "These Arms of Mine," underscores the message behind Edwin Starr's "War" at a funeral pace, and gives James Taylor a shudder with her lush, Eastern-tinged take on Marvin Gaye's "How Sweet It Is." Most unexpected. ~ Aidin Vaziri, Amazon SONGS/TRACKS: 1. I'll Be Around 2. Think 3. How Sweet It Is 4. Smiling Faces Sometimes 5. Love's In Need Of Love Today 6. These Arms Of Mine 7. Only You Know And I Know 8. War 9. Why Can't We Live Together 10. Axis: Bold As Love 11. The Weight 12. Everybody Is A Star File Under: R&B, Folk - Keyword: Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Jimi Hendrix *JEFF BLACK B-Sides And Confessions Volume On (Dualtone 2003 - New & Sealed CD) Jeff Black is yet another songwriter whose career was sidetracked by record-company foolishness. After Arista released his superb debut, "Birmingham Road," in 1998 (with help from some of the guys in Wilco), the label dropped him, leaving his followup disc orphaned. In the meantime, he's released "B-Sides and Confessions Volume One," an intimate, soulful and thoughtful collection of stripped-down music. As noted, the title is only half right. These are confessions, but they are not B sides. Black is a rarity, a poet who produces quietly compelling sing-alongs that, upon closer reflection, challenge you to think. No wonder artists as diverse as Ellis Paul and Vance Gilbert, who recorded his "What Do I Want" for their latest disc, and country stars Blackhawk, who made his "That's Just About Right" a number one hit, have covered his songs. With "B Sides and Confessions, Volume One," Black has created one of the most affecting -- and best -- singer/songwriter albums of 2003 or any other year in recent memory. It's filled with rare treasures that linger long after the music stops. SONGS/TRACKS: 1. Slip 2. Same Old River 3. Holy Roller 4. Sunday Best 5. To Be With You 6. Gold Heart Locket 7. Cakewalk 8. Bless My Soul 9. Bastard 10. Higher Ground File Under: Folk, Rock - Keyword: Wilco, Blackhawk *JEFF BLACK Tin Lilly (Dualtone 2005 - New & Sealed CD) Jeff Black is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist (guitar, keys, harmonica) whose Americana music incorporates influences of country, folk and rock stylings. His songs have been covered by Waylon Jennings, Sam Bush, Lisa Brokop, Jo-El Sonnier, Blackhawk and others. Although Arista Records put out his debut album, it is the Dualtone label that has now signed Black and released "Tin Lily." Black's mix of folk, country, pop and rock influences place him in the hard-to-define Americana genre. He can stretch out on sophisticated folk songs that bring to mind the British moodiness of Richard Thompson, but he can also plug-in for electric country rockers like "Libertine" that would be at home on Steve Earle's set list, and spin bouncy pop numbers like "Free at Last" that sound like a rustic version of Billy Joel. Tin Lily covers much ground. There is a spiritual theme which runs throughout many of the songs, not in a preachy way, but in very soothing acknowlegment that there's a greater good. Jeff has brought in a great group of musicians to augment his playing. Great work again from Jody Nardone on piano and the other players. Highlights for me, so far: "Free at Last" a roll down the windows and drive kind of song. "These Days", "Easy on Me" and the beautiful "Heaven Now" continue to show a tenderness in his writing and sweetnees in that very rich voice. There is a warmth and comfort in these songs which shows, once again, that Jeff Black remains one of the great American songwriters and musicians. SONGS/TRACKS: 1. Easy On Me 2. Hollow Of Your Hand 3. Nineteen 4. Libertine 5. Free At Last 6. Hard Way Out 7. Closer 8. All Days Shine 9. Heaven Now 10. These Days 11. How Long 12. A Better Way File Under: Folk, Alt Country - Keyword: Blackhawk, Waylon Jennings, Sam Bush *BEN & JASON Ten Songs About You (Universal/Polydor 2001 - New & Sealed CD) Their first album,"Emoticons", was critically acclaimed. Many people linked them to either Radiohead, Jeff Buckley or Nick Drake in one way or another. Includes an enhanced component that includes a short film, lyrics, discography, photos and a biography. REVIEW: At times it's hard to listen to Ten Songs About You without wondering whether this is the work of the same Ben & Jason well known for so many subtle acoustic-led tracks. The third album from the North London duo is far more lavish affair--gone are the bare guitar strums and hushed vocals that at one time found them being labelled "acoustic Radiohead". Tracks such as "Wild Things" and "See You in My Dreams" have been polished to pop perfection, while "How The Hell Do I Explain" with its lush rather than subtle string arrangements and sweeping piano accompaniment aligns them more towards Elliott Smith (appearing with his backing band) than part of the so-called "new acoustic" movement. Acts such as the Kings of Convenience and Turin Brakes may have drawn their influences from a similar array of folk/acoustic guitar legends, but Ten Songs About You merely takes those sounds as its starting point with the onus clearly on the songs - and Ben & Jason are fantastic song writers. The result is a much more focused album and while Ben & Jason may claim that this is also a less personal album (despite the title hinting otherwise), fortunately for us, it is no less an emotional one. ~ Amazon UK SONGS/TRACKS: 1. Wild Things 2. That Film With All The Kisses At The End 3. Duet 4. Fingertipping 5. If All We Had Were Stars 6. See You In My Dreams 7. Let's Murder Vivaldi 8. Great Days 9. How The Hell Do I Explain 10.
