The ultimate record -- the way music was meant to be heard and of superior quality for any Audiophile. Rushed out less than nine months after the surprise success of Dire Straits' self-titled debut album, the group's sophomore effort, Communiqué, seemed little more than a carbon copy of its predecessor with less compelling material. Mark Knopfler and co. had established a sound (derived largely from J.J. Cale) of laid-back shuffles and intricate, bluesy guitar playing, and Communiqué provided more examples of it. But there was no track as focused as "Sultans of Swing," even if "Lady Writer" nearly duplicated its sound. As a result, Communiqué sold immediately to Dire Straits' established audience, but no more, and it did not fare as well critically as its predecessor or its follow-up.  The mighty COMMUNIQUE (No.5 UK, No.11 US, '79) is their 2nd album and has quite a history to it! The band had just begun to record COMMUNIQUE at Compass Point in the Bahamas when "Sultans Of Swing" from the their debut album took off in both the UK and US in early 1979. This added even more impetus to the band and added an extra sparkle in the studio with legendary producers Jerry Wexler and Barry Beckett producing a suddenly hot international act. COMMUNIQUE sold a staggering 7million copies without even generating a huge hit (although "Lady Writer" did register slightly in the lower reaches of the US Top 50). In fact, COMMUNIQUE must have been a great experience because the producers invited the whole band over to Muscle Shoals Studios to help out with Bob Dylan's "Slow Train Coming later in the year! Definitely one for the Dire `die-hards'! BROTHERS IN ARMS - Propelled by Mark Knopfler's literate songs, gruff vocals, and spidery guitar work, Dire Straits had overcome initial skepticism for their resistance to '70s new wave accents in favor of a rootsy traditionalism. This 1985 album captures the band consolidating a far more epic style than the concise shuffles and ballads that the original scrappy quartet had reeled off, their ambitions fueled by the larger canvas afforded by the CD. One of the first albums to exploit the format's longer playing time, Brothers in Arms was initially released in separate versions for CD/cassette and edited LP, and the band became digital poster boys on a world tour sponsored by CD hardware interests. Critics that had once warmed to the band sniffed at the marketing, but the album remains their best known, noteworthy for the MTV staple "Money for Nothing" and the breezy rock shuffle "Walk of Life," as well as for the wistful "So Far Away," the plot-driven narratives of "Ride Across the River," and the title song Track Listings 1. Brothers in Arms MAKING MOVIES - On Making Movies, the cinematic quality of these sometimes silly but generally engaging story songs is consistently overwhelmed by its own score, a soundtrack of thundering drums, cascading piano, perpetual-motion grooves, and the clipped lead guitar lines of frontman Mark Knopfler. On "Skateaway," that sound is so engaging and catchy that it makes up for the song's slight lyric (about a girl who roller-skates in traffic), but when Knopfler provides tales that are up to the fanfare, this album is a thing of real beauty. In a sense, the album is their prog rock effort, containing only five songs, including the 14-minute opener "Telegraph Road."
