Arthur Rubinstein's limpid, rich-toned Chopin playing was always something to treasure, I think -- did his natural-sounding rubato have anything to do with his own Polish background? -- and RCA has reissued his 1959 recordings of the Ballades and Scherzos here in "hybrid" SACD-surround format. The original quality of the engineering -- supervised by producer John Pfeiffer -- has never been questioned, and the reproduction truly blossoms when expanded into SACD format. (There's a note on the back cover, explaining that, when played back in SACD Surround format, the original three-track recording will only be heard coming from the front left, center and right speakers -- no dispersing of the piano around the room!) I'm listing this CD as "new" -- it's not shrinkwrapped, but it came to me new and I've never played it. One track per piece, eight tracks in all. Total program timing is 71.24.
