As a bonus, the original "maverick" of country music, Willie Nelson, guests on "Time Goes By." SONGS/TRACKS: 1. I Want To Know 2. In My Dreams 3. Shine Your Light 4. I'm Wondering 5. By The Time 6. When an injury permanently derailed his athletic career, his fellow students at Baylor University encouraged him to begin performing his music in public, and soon he was one of the biggest attractions on the Waco club circuit. After graduating in 1987, he pursued music full-time, moving in 1991 to Nashville to form a band with his friend Brett Beavers. After supporting Martina McBride during her 1992 tour opening for Garth Brooks, Dodd sang backing vocals on McBride's second LP before embarking on a solo career. He also played in Tracy Lawrence's band and sang harmony on records by Radney Foster and George Ducas. After a 1994 demo deal fell through, Dodd issued his debut album, One Ride in Vegas, in 1996. A self-titled effort followed two years later. Shortly after his 1998 album was released, Dodd was planning national tour, opening for Tim McGraw and Brooks & Dunn, but his plans were foiled when he was diagnosed with an acute case of viral encephalitis. Dodd was bedridden for six months, per doctor's orders. He then went through a rehabilitation period lasting a year and a half, during which he had to relearn how to play the guitar. After playing songwriter nights in Nashville, Dodd ditched his deal with Columbia Records in favor of Lucky Dog, a Sony imprint dedicated to Texas music. 2002's Pearl Snaps appeared on Lucky Dog. He returned to Texas, where he was fortunate enough to be invited to record Live at Billy Bob's Texas, which was issued in August 2003. After returning to Texas, things continually went up, including the sales of his 2004 album Pearl Snaps. In 2006, Dodd released Full Circle on DualTone Nashville. SONGS/TRACKS: 1. Never Again 2. Stronger Proof 3. Somethin' Ain't Always Better 4. Outside Lookin' In 5. More Of The Same 6. Love Or Something Like It 7. She Does The Best She Can 8. Livin' Where You Told Me To Go 9. Let Me Be 10. The Crowd File Under: Honky Tonk, Blues - Keyword: Tracy Lawrence, Martina McBride *DAVID BALL Amigo (Dualtone 2001 - New & Sealed CD) REVIEWS: Though he sports a cowboy hat and once did time on a major label, David Ball is no "hat act." Even on an independent label, he still manages to get his albums into the country and pop charts, he writes most of his songs, plays with a real band instead of a bunch of clock-watching Nashville studio rats, and most importantly, he plays real country music. Still, to peg Ball as a traditionalist would be a mistake; though he covers Merle Haggard's "Trying Not to Love You" on AMIGO, he's not really a honky-tonker. Over the course of the album, he dabbles in western swing, Tex-Mex, swaying Jimmy Buffett folk-rock, and gently paced story songs. Whatever style he takes on though, there's an air of authenticity to David Ball's approach, and that's what makes AMIGO so appealing. ~ Ebay David Ball's 1988 debut was sweet and melodic, complete with yodeling and a beguiling, light-on-its-feet traditionalism. Following his 1994 Top 10 single, "Thinkin' Problem," he wound up lost in the hat-act shuffle, which, had he stuck with it, would probably have destroyed his integrity as it had that of so many others. Amigo returns Ball to his Southwestern roots. The title song, which he co-penned with Kostas, has a '40s feeling that sets the tone for the entire record. Other Ball-authored material is just as fine, particularly "Missing Her Blues," the yodelfest "Texas Echo," and the gutsy gospel of "When the Devil Wants to Wrestle." Ball also includes a masterful interpretation of Merle Haggard's loungy "Trying Not to Love You" and demonstrates his flawless taste in vintage material, recasting the 1920s pop hit "Linger Awhile" as fetching, acoustic-driven Western swing and the classic "Just Out of Reach" as a waltz. He may not be swimming in gold and platinum discs nowadays, but with a package this artistically satisfying under his belt, who cares? ~ Amazon SONGS/TRACKS: 1. Amigo 2. Missing Her Blues 3. She Always Talked About Mexico 4. Riding With Private Malone 5. Whenever You Come Back To Me 6. Loser Friendly 7. Linger Awhile 8. Trying Not To Love You 9. New Shiner Polka 10. Texas Echo 11. Swing Baby 12. Just Out Of Reach 13. When The Devil Wants To Wrestle File Under: Alt Country - Keyword: Merle Haggard, Jimmy Buffett *McBRIDE & THE RIDE Amarillo Sky (Dualtone 2002 - New & Sealed CD) McBride and the Ride, a solid journeymen trio headed by Texas-born tenor and celebrated songwriter Terry McBride, flourished briefly in the early '90s with hits like "Sacred Ground," "Just One Night," and "Love on the Loose, Heart on the Run" before disbanding in 1994. In the years since, McBride, a vastly gifted songwriter, has penned a slew of hits for the likes of George Strait and Brooks & Dunn. On Amarillo Sky, their first album in eight years, McBride and company are reunited, sounding more vibrant and focused than ever on 10 tunes, mostly cowritten by McBride. Among many highlights are the heartfelt, life-on-the-land title tune, passionate ballads like "Anything That Touches You" and "Yours," and a lusty, twangy reprise of the Who's "Squeeze Box." SONGS/TRACKS: 1. Amarillo Sky 2. Sure Feels Like It 3. Anything That Touches You 4. You Take My Hear There 5. Leave Her With Me 6. Yours 7. Squeeze Box 8. Why Not Colorado 9. Hasta Luego 10.
