New Listing 6 CD LOT ALTERNATIVE COUNTRY All CDs in this lot are new and still sealed! *STEVE EARL The Revolution Starts Now (Artemis 2004 - New & Sealed CD) Steve Earle is widely known as a tireless political activist who's not afraid to use his music to further the causes for which he fights. In 2004, America was in dire need of forward-looking activism, and Earle responded with THE REVOLUTION STARTS NOW. The album was written and recorded quickly in order for Earle to get his two cents in before the Presidential election, and it turned out to be both his most overtly political and most effectively concise offering to date. With a mix of country and straightforward rock & roll, Earle engages in rabble-rousing (the title track), tells the tales of people victimized by the war in Iraq ("Home to Houston," "Rich Man's War"), and lambasts stifling conservative forces on the homefront ("F the CC"). There are a couple of love songs thrown in for good measure, and they're all the more affecting for their marked contrast. THE REVOLUTION STARTS NOW seamlessly blends the personal and the political without a trace of mawkishness or didacticism. Features a duet with Emmylou Harris called, "Comin' Around." SONGS/TRACKS: 1. Revolution Starts Now, The 2. Home to Houston 3. Rich Man's War 4. Warrior 5. Gringo's Tale, The 6. Condi, Condi 7. F the Cc 8. Comin' Around 9. I Thought You Should Know 10. Seeker, The 11. Revolution Starts Now, The File Under: Country - Keyword: Emmylou Harris *COWBOY JACK CLEMENT Guess Things Happen That Way (Dualtone 2004 - New & Sealed CD) Here's the second album in 26 years by Nashville's enduring maverick and eccentric--a 73-year-old "genius-visionary" in the words of some, and "professional fool" in his own words. It opens with an uptempo version of the Stones' "No Expectations" that's eventually goosed along by a soul chorus and horn-like keyboards, and includes Cowboy's own interpretations of songs he wrote that others made famous, most notably the great title song and "Ballad of a Teenage Queen" (both associated with Johnny Cash). Anyone who writes "S-E-R-I-O-U-S-L-Y" in this day and age clearly has undeniable love for real country in its various guises, however oddly he chooses to express it, and the accordion-oiled "Drinking Carrot Juice" suggests he probably doesn't care what you think anyhow. Such tracks more than compensate for a couple looney-tunes jazz missteps, and you've got to hand it to someone who sings like Walter-Brennan-only-carrying-a-tune and plays Dobro so sweet and simple. ~ Amazon CD features Billy Burnette (Fleetwood Mac) and The Jordanaires (Elvis Presley). SONGS/TRACKS: 1. No Expectations 2. Guess Things Happen That Way 3. There Ain't A Tune 4. It'll Be Me 5. S-E-R-I-O-U-S-L-Y 6. Dreaming My Dreams With You 7. Every Place I've Ever Been 8. Trapped In An Old Country Song 9. Ballad Of A Teenage Queen 10. Drinking Carrot Jusice 11. Leavin' Is The Lovin' Thing To Do 12. Off To Join The World File Under: Country - Keyword: Johnny Cash, Billy Burnette *DAVID BALL Amigo (Dualtone 2001 - New & Sealed CD) REVIEWS: Though he sports a cowboy hat and once did time on a major label, David Ball is no "hat act." Even on an independent label, he still manages to get his albums into the country and pop charts, he writes most of his songs, plays with a real band instead of a bunch of clock-watching Nashville studio rats, and most importantly, he plays real country music. Still, to peg Ball as a traditionalist would be a mistake; though he covers Merle Haggard's "Trying Not to Love You" on AMIGO, he's not really a honky-tonker. Over the course of the album, he dabbles in western swing, Tex-Mex, swaying Jimmy Buffett folk-rock, and gently paced story songs. Whatever style he takes on though, there's an air of authenticity to David Ball's approach, and that's what makes AMIGO so appealing. ~ Ebay David Ball's 1988 debut was sweet and melodic, complete with yodeling and a beguiling, light-on-its-feet traditionalism. Following his 1994 Top 10 single, "Thinkin' Problem," he wound up lost in the hat-act shuffle, which, had he stuck with it, would probably have destroyed his integrity as it had that of so many others. Amigo returns Ball to his Southwestern roots. The title song, which he co-penned with Kostas, has a '40s feeling that sets the tone for the entire record. Other Ball-authored material is just as fine, particularly "Missing Her Blues," the yodelfest "Texas Echo," and the gutsy gospel of "When the Devil Wants to Wrestle." Ball also includes a masterful interpretation of Merle Haggard's loungy "Trying Not to Love You" and demonstrates his flawless taste in vintage material, recasting the 1920s pop hit "Linger Awhile" as fetching, acoustic-driven Western swing and the classic "Just Out of Reach" as a waltz. He may not be swimming in gold and platinum discs nowadays, but with a package this artistically satisfying under his belt, who cares? ~ Amazon SONGS/TRACKS: 1. Amigo 2. Missing Her Blues 3. She Always Talked About Mexico 4. Riding With Private Malone 5. Whenever You Come Back To Me 6. Loser Friendly 7. Linger Awhile 8. Trying Not To Love You 9. New Shiner Polka 10. Texas Echo 11. Swing Baby 12. Just Out Of Reach 13. When The Devil Wants To Wrestle File Under: Alt Country - Keyword: Merle Haggard, Jimmy Buffett *THE MAVERICKS (Sanctuary 2003 - New & Sealed CD) The Mavericks shook up country music in the 1990s with their combination of snappy, neo-traditional honky tonk and un-ironic retro pop-rock styles, and then went on an extended hiatus. 2003's THE MAVERICKS (not to be confused with their eponymous debut album) finds them resuming where they left off--they present a tight, accomplished but heartfelt program of winsome ballads ("A Little Too Lonely"), Cuban-influenced numbers ("Shine A Light"), and classic '70s pop (a lovely cover of the Hollies hit "The Air That I Breathe"). As a bonus, the original "maverick" of country music, Willie Nelson, guests on "Time Goes By." SONGS/TRACKS: 1. I Want To Know 2. In My Dreams 3. Shine Your Light 4. I'm Wondering 5. By The Time 6. Would You Believe 7. Too Lonely 8. Time Goes By - (featuring Willie Nelson) 9. San Jose 10. Because Of You 11. Air That I Breathe File Under: Alt Country, Honky-Tonk - Keyword: Willie Nelson, The Hollies *THE SILOS When The Telephone Rings (Dualtone 2004 - New & Sealed CD - There is a small drill hole in the jewel case) When the Telephone Rings bursts out of the starting blocks with "The Only Love," a fiery rocker fueled by some high-octane guitar from the great Richard Lloyd, and for five minutes it sounds like Walter Salas-Humara and his latest edition of the Silos have finally made the top-shelf rock & roll record they've long had in 'em (and almost made with Laser Beam Next Door). Sad to say, the album never kicks quite that hard again, but When the Telephone Rings manages a taut emotional intensity that's both bracing and satisfying, and it still rocks with greater conviction than most anything in the band's catalog. Much of the album was cut with Salas-Humara on guitar, Drew Glackin on drums, and Konrad Meissner on drums, and together they're a tight rhythm section capable of cutting an impressive groove, with a rotating cast of friends filling out the sound. The Silos circa 2004 are a capable power trio who don't need all that much assistance to bring these songs up to speed, and when they want to ease things back a bit, they can still hit the target (as on the moody title cut). And while Salas-Humara remains a passionate realist two decades into the Silos' career, these 11 songs celebrate life in all its glories (as well its occasional indignities) as only someone who's been around the block a few times can. When the Telephone Rings is rock & roll by grown-ups for grown-ups, and the maturity and wisdom inherent in this music doesn't minimize the sweaty fun to be had. Read the lyrics and turn it up. SONGS/TRACKS: 1. Only Love, The 2. Whistled A Slow Waltz 3. Ready For ANything 4. Holding On To Life 5. Innocent 6. When The Telephone RIngs 7. First Move, The 8. Don't Wanna Know 9. 15 Days 10. Dumbest On Parade 11. Take A Hit File Under: Alt Country - Keyword: Walter Salas-Humara, Richard Lloyd (Television) *DERYL DODD Stronger Proof (Dualtone 2004 - New & Sealed CD) Honky Tonker Deryl Dodd grew up in Dallas, TX, where he favored football over music throughout his formative years. When an injury permanently derailed his athletic career, his fellow students at Baylor University encouraged him to begin performing his music in public, and soon he was one of the biggest attractions on the Waco club circuit. After graduating in 1987, he pursued music full-time, moving in 1991 to Nashville to form a band with his friend Brett Beavers. After supporting Martina McBride during her 1992 tour opening for Garth Brooks, Dodd sang backing vocals on McBride's second LP before embarking on a solo career. He also played in Tracy Lawrence's band and sang harmony on records by Radney Foster and George Ducas. After a 1994 demo deal fell through, Dodd issued his debut album, One Ride in Vegas, in 1996. A self-titled effort followed two years later. Shortly after his 1998 album was released, Dodd was planning national tour, opening for Tim McGraw and Brooks & Dunn, but his plans were foiled when he was diagnosed with an acute case of viral encephalitis. Dodd was bedridden for six months, per doctor's orders. He then went through a rehabilitation period lasting a year and a half, during which he had to relearn how to play the guitar. After playing songwriter nights in Nashville, Dodd ditched his deal with Columbia Records in favor of Lucky Dog, a Sony imprint dedicated to Texas music. 2002's Pearl Snaps appeared on Lucky Dog. He returned to Texas, where he was fortunate enough to be invited to record Live at Billy Bob's Texas, which was issued in August 2003. After returning to Texas, things continually went up, including the sales of his 2004 album Pearl Snaps. In 2006, Dodd released Full Circle on DualTone Nashville. SONGS/TRACKS: 1. Never Again 2. Stronger Proof 3. Somethin' Ain't Always Better 4. Outside Lookin' In 5. More Of The Same 6. Love Or Something Like It 7. She Does The Best She Can 8. Livin' Where You Told Me To Go 9. Let Me Be 10.
