New Listing 6 CD LOT ALTERNATIVE ROCK All CDs in this lot are new and still sealed! *CONCRETE BLONDE Group Therapy (Manifesto 2002 - New & Sealed CD) Practice is said to make perfect, but perspective is arguably just as important. Group Therapy, Concrete Blonde's first new record after an eight-year hiatus, shows that original band members Johnette Napolitano, Jim Mankey, and Harry Rushakoff have gained some of just that. They've stepped out of the shadow of the Pretenders and shrugged off the Goth overtones that characterized their last commercially successful record (1990's Bloodletting), and have found that the balance between stylizing and emulating comes from putting personality--not posturing--first. Group Therapy opens with the radio single "Roxy," a tribute in form and content to Eno-era Roxy Music. With a pastiche of lyrics delivered in Napolitano's strong, throaty voice, the song sets the stage for a dozen tracks ranging in style from adult-oriented rock tunes to truck-stop country ballads to angry rock ragers about growing up and getting real. Though they occasionally read like high school poetry, the lyrics are redeemed by the sincerity of the band's performance. Group Therapy is dynamic and accessible enough to gain the band new listeners while giving old fans the sort of exciting Concrete Blonde music they've waited for since Bloodletting. ~ Amazon SONGS/TRACKS: 1. Features standout recording from Neko Case, who was named No. 1 on John Peel's Festive 50 for 2000 and more recently opened for Nick Cave's 2001 solo US tour. SONGS/TRACKS: 1. SR is film, he's music, he's literature, he's Johnny Cash and Rod Serling and Ennio Morricone and all sorts of other things all rolled into one. If Harry Dean Stanton wrote tunes, he'd be Stan Ridgway. If L.A. Confidential were a person, he'd be Stan Ridgway. Every album Stan's done is the best album he's ever done. They're addictive, they're good driving music, and some stuff, particularly on this CD and on the Drywall: Work the Dumb Oracle CD, will make you feel just a little uncomfortable to be living in this day and age. Underneath it all, Stan is a stunningly original talent. This is a fantastic CD. Okay? Buy it. Just buy it. If you don't like it, who knows? Maybe you're not living on the right planet (or maybe you are, and you just don't know it yet). ~ Amazon SONGS/TRACKS: 1. Big Dumb Town 2. Gone The Distance 3. Knife And Fork 4. Down The Coast Hwy 5. Northwest artists, who strongly believe in AHFA's cause, have banned together to help drum up support for the organization they love. Top name artists like Everclear, Sweaty Nipples, Dandy Warhols, Eric Matthews, 5 Fingers of Funk, and Super Deluxe have all contributed a song, as well as a lot of other artists, spanning a lot of ground musically. From the rap tracks of Cool Nuts, to the punk sound of The Jimmies, you are sure to find a track or two that you will fall in love with (and be helping a great cause!) The CD starts out with a poem from Alyssa Burrows. Next up with the power-rock, bass heavy track is Portland's very own Sweaty Nipples with "We Don't Want It." A powerful track, and being a Sweaty Fan, a new track for me that I enjoyed a lot. The Daylights contributed their heavy metal/pop-punk track "From the Inside." It starts out heavy metal, and when it hits the chorus it changes tempo to pop-punk, only to go back to its heavy metal tempo. The chorus was brilliantly written. If it weren't for the heavy metal in the song, this would be the best track on the album! The Jimmies contributed "Cheap." Their punk tale of what it's like to drink too much and how you feel cheap. With lyrics like "I can't wait to tomorrow/it's just another day I'll feel sorrow," and "Every once in awhile when I start drinking I feel lonely when I'm drinking/why do I like to feeling so cheaply/when I'm drinking I feel cheap now." This was my favorite track on the album! The Jimmies do it in style! Any message they want to get across, they successfully do it with music that won't leave your head! Next up is Floater with "American Theatric." These guys are very original. Blending metal with bass oriented rock, and lead by some great vocals, these guys kick out a unique blend of rock n' roll. There are twenty tracks in all. From punk, to metal, to soft rock, to poems you will find anything you are looking for! SONGS/TRACKS: 1. Big Boys and Bruisers - Alyssa Burrows 2. We Don't Want It - Sweaty Nipples 3. Not Your Bottle - The Dandy Warhols 4. Hate on Mine - Cool Nutz 5. Underwear - Carmina Piranha 6. Heroin Girl (acoustic) - Everclear 7. Wither - Village Idiot 20. Mama Can't Walk - Gus Van Sant File Under: Alternative, Poetry - Keyword: Dandy Warhols, Everclear, Sweaty Nipples *THE MINUS 5 Emperor of The Bathroom (ESD 1995 - New & Sealed CD) With the Young Fresh Fellows on hold in the early '90s, Seattle singer-guitarist (and Trouser Press contributor) Scott McCaughey launched The Minus 5 with Peter Buck of R.E.M. (for whom McCaughey has been a concert sideman since 1995). The free-floating aggregation has variously involved members of NRBQ, Wilco, the Posies and Walkabouts (not to mention Fellows bassist Jim Sangster and, on the John Lennon tribute album, Mary Lou Lord, Lee Ranaldo and Dennis Diken). Emperor of the Bathroom follows the title track (Old Liquidator's only real pop-rocker) with another album cut ("Story"), a spare remake of "Vulture," a jokey country weeper ("Heartache for Sale") and McCaughey's solo acoustic cover of the Fantastic Baggys' "This Little Woody." SONGS/TRACKS: 1. Emperor Of The Bathroom 2. Heartache For Sale 3. Story 4. Vulture 5. This Little Woody File Under: Alternative - Keyword: R.E.M., NRBQ, Wilco, Posies, Walkabouts *RISING STARS (Epic 2004 - New & Sealed CD) Compilation of new artists from Sony including Phantom Planet, Lostprophets, Pete Yorn, The Raveonettes and others. The Raveonettes: Danish rock and roll duo consisting of Sune Rose Wagner (on guitar, instruments, vocals) and Sharin Foo (on bass and vocals). Their music is characterized by close two-part vocal harmonies inspired by the Everly Brothers, coupled with hard-edged electric guitar overlaid with liberal doses of noise. Their songs juxtapose the structural and chordal simplicity of 50s and 60s rock with intense electric instrumentation, driving beats and often dark lyrical content, similar to another of the band's influences, The Velvet Underground. Phantom Planet: Frequently evolving four-piece alternative music band based out of Southern California that achieved fame for its track "California," which has gone on to become the theme song for the popular Fox TV series, The O.C.. Phantom Planet also performed a cover of Jackson Browne's Somebody's Baby for Not Another Teen Movie. Big Brat was also introduced in the video game soundtrack, Driv3r (Driver 3). The Ataris: American group formed in 1994 in Anderson, Indiana. The band released three albums and three EPs through independent label Kung Fu Records before releasing so long, astoria in 2003 on Columbia Records. Best known for their cover of the Don Henley classic "The Boys of Summer." SONGS/TRACKS: 1. Burn, Burn - Lostprophets 2. Big Brat - Phantom Planet 3. That Great Love Sound - The Raveonettes 4.
