Description
*****This auction is for one REEL of one inch 8 track professional studio tape (analog), which contains the original 5 songs recorded by the Memphis rock (psychedelic) "garage" band, named: 'The Changing Tymes.' **This tape contains three different versions of their 1969 release: "Blue Music Box" (two versions have never before been heard), as are four other original tunes by this Memphis rock N roll band of the late 1960's. ***Here are the titles to the songs included on these tapes: "HARK THE CHILD" (eery psychedelic mantra against the war in Vietnam): "Karolina Kroone" (a very harmonic and humorous take off, from a tune which I heard in a Laurel & Hardy show. I put words to that tune and came up with this very creative and original "spooning tune"); Three different versions of "Blue Music Box" (one slow and one faster, one more psyched out); and "Something They Ate" (a real 12 string psyche tune, reminiscent of The Byrd's) all about taking acid in the 1960's. ALSO: the B side to their 45 release "Chicago Street Fight' (a very much Byrds sounding tune, describing the chaos of the 1968 Democratic Convention! These songs were recorded in Memphis, Tennessee in October 1968, at the 'Sounds of Memphis' temporary studio, which was located in an alley off Camilla Street, near the Memphis medical center, prior to Sounds of Memphis moving into it's newly completed recording studio on Rayner Street; *Albert Collins' "Trash Talkin" album (with the great Charlie Freeman providing the "chinks") and the super musician, blues historian, and great producer Jim Dickinson. (not to mention, key-boardist for Bob Dylan, & The Rolling Stones). 'The Dixie Flyers' recorded in that temporary studio, which had been constructed inside of an old cigar warehouse. *And to quote Dickinson "It was a great little blues studio, and they should have never moved out of there into the new place!" (Jim played on many sessions in this "alley studio" including his doing the overdubs on old Johnny Winter masters, for Bill Hall). ***The eight track tape up for auction in this ad, and all subsequent tapes recorded in the alley studio, were recorded on the Ampex 440 AG machine, that you can see in one of the photos included in this ad. ***In the included photo of me at the sound board, you can see behind me, the Ampex eight track machine used to record these sessions. **State of the art, for 1968! ***It was a great sounding 'funky' room - perfect for Rock &/or Blues! ****So much for the background on the studio. It's just that I rarely read about it in print, or hear it mentioned in documentaries, which are concerned with that period of Memphis music history -- the late 1960's and early 70's. **Let me assure you: The sound quality on this tape is excellent, but very raunchy sounding, garage band sounding attempt, at 1960's psychedlic rock N roll! It's a great session, by a really unique and talented bunch of young musicians, in the Memphis "hippie daze"!!! I was the engineer/producer on these tapes, so I can recall from personal experience, exactly what went down during that period, and how these songs by 'The Changing Tymes' were actually recorded. **In a recent book about these times, written by a local author , it is mistakenly mentioned that this band and these songs were recorded at a different studio, called: 'Beautiful Sounds.' **That is incorrect. Years later I worked for Dan Penn, at Beautiful Sounds recording studio, which was located on Highland Street, next door to Channel 13, but it was at "the temporary studio" -- "the alley studio", where these recordings, by The Changing Tymes were done! ***I did produce one band at Beautiful Sounds, for Penn, but their name was: "SNAKE" and the only other work I did at Penn's studio, was 'running the board' for him, on the "Nobody's Fool" sessions. Nothing more! ***All the rock bands I recorded in 1968 and 1969, were either recorded at Sam Phillips Recording (639 Madison Ave.), or at "the alley studio" Sounds of Memphis, Inc. - as mentioned above. **Two of the songs on this master tape, were released around the beginning of 1969, on an independent 45 vinyl single -- the Memphis Underground Music Association label (M.U.M.A.). ***A photo of that record is included in this ad. **This was done by their manager, Parks Matthews, without my permission, and that is what ended my relationship with this band. **I had given Parks a 'mix-down' of two of the tunes on these songs on a cassette tape, and apparently that is where the tracks for pressing of the 45 single came from! ***So now, for the past 40 years, these tapes (this band -- and these recording sessions) have been sitting in my Mother's closet, rolled up, 'tails-out' cool and dry! ***About four years ago, I transferred these recordings to a CD, at the studio of Mike Durf, which was located down on Main Street in Memphis, next-door to the world famous 'Arcade Restaurant.' ( photo of Durf, in his control room, during the transfer session w/me, is included in this ad. ***Mike actually did the work on transferring these songs to CD form, and was amazed that the tape had not broken once, and that the sound quality was as good as it had been the day after they were actually recorded! **Several times during the transferring session at Durf's analog studio, he made specific comments to that effect. ***The tapes are in super excellent condition, and will pose NO problem to the buyer of this master reel, when it is played, and/or utilized to mix down the songs. NOTE***In the exhaustive reference book to American rock music -- 'Fuzz, Acid and Flowers: a Comprehensive Guide to American Garage, Psychedelic and Hippie Rock' (1964-1975), the author Vernon Joynson, had this to say about "The Changin' Tymes": Chicago Street Fight / Blue Music Box (M.U.M.A. Muma 1) 1969 "A gloriously rare 45 on the 'Memphis Underground Music Association' label whose design incorporates the peace salute and which gives off suitably '68' heavy' vibes, man. The choice cut 'Blue Music Box' - "a ferocious 1968 grinder that's reminiscent of a track off MC5's "Kick Out The Jams" - kicks off the essential CD compilation A Lethal Dose Of Hard Psych. More recently, "Blue Music Box" appeared on A History Of Garage And Frat Bands In Memphis (CD) compilation, whose companion book by Ron Hall gives the personnel above and tells their story ('Playing For A Piece Of The Door', published in 2001 by Shangri-La Projects, ISBN 0-9668575-1-8). (Max Waller/Erik Lindgren). The locally produced compilation CD: "A History of Garage and Frat Bands" -- which can be purchased on the internet at the web site for Shangri-La Records, or at their local record shop, in Memphis, TN. **also NOTE: this CD release was also done without my permission or knowledge! It's what "old Dewey" would call a "bootleg" -- plain and simple, and probably was digitized straight from the 45 single record, in cohoots with the bass player, without the knowledge, nor compensation, for the rest of the guys in the band, me or the studio! ****SO, here it is -- the one chance you will ever have to own a piece of, not only Memphis Music History, but American rock music history! **I pray that whoever buys these tapes (if they decide to market them CD) will be responsible, and deal fairly with the writers of the songs, as well as the players in the band, as prescribed by law & conscience! **Once this auction is concluded, and the tapes are shipped to the buyer, I am out of it completely, and any and all rights, that I may possess as the Producer on the stuff - - will automatically be transferred to the purchaser of the tapes! *****I've held it for 40 years, and haven't done anything with it, but preserve it, now it's someone else's turn to do something with it! ******BUYER AGREES TO PAY FOR: UPS Delivery, with insurance for twice the amount you end up paying for them! **The amount of this shipping fee will be computed, once the destination of buyer is known! ***At the close of the auction, just contact me with your address, and I will finalize your total to be paid, including shipping & insurance. (worldwide or otherwise) ***If you'd like to know what that shipping fee will be, BEFORE you bid, then contact me with your address, and I'll get that for you -- no problem! ***The buyer also purchases these tapes with the knowledge that there is a NO RETURN, & NO REFUND offered on the purchase. ***You buy them and their yours! ***ALSO, whomever wins this auction, WILL PAY in FULL within 3 days of the close of this auction! This can be done with 'PAYPAL, or CASHIER's CHECK -- no other payment method will be accepted. NOW BID and be happy! Check out my feedbacks, and you'll see, I DO what I SAY, and I expect the same! GOOD LUCK & Happy eBaying always! LET ME REPEAT, so theres no mistake about it: ***As the producer of these tapes, ANY & all rights, AND/OR liabilities, I MAY have, as a matter of law or otherwise, SHALL be conveyed in totality to the buyer of these tapes. Period. **What the buyer does with these tapes, will become their business, and it will be up to that buyer to deal with the musicians in a legally responsible way, of course. If you purchase these tapes, and release these recordings without fullfiling your legal responsibilties to the artists and players, then you do so at your own accord. I am NOT offering anything for sale except the taped recordings sessions, that I have possessed and maintained for 40 years, which were produced in my uncle's studio (Stanley Kesler), with his equipment, on his tape, and for his production company. Whatever legal rights, and/or liabilties, that are attached to these tape recordings, by way of the facts concerning the production and maintenance of said tapes, WILL be transferred to the buyer & new owner, by the agreement and understanding of this sale & purchase -- and that does NOT include any type of documentation, other than the content of this ad (auction) on eBay, that would preclude the new owner (buyer) from his/her legal & moral obligation to the artists and musicians who participated on this project. I am not a lawyer, but I did consult with several very capable attorney's before I made the decision to sell these tapes, so based on their opinions and advice -- this will have to suffice as my best answer to your legal questions! I don't know how I can be any more clear about this sale, except to reiterate -- Whoever wins this auction, and purchases these tapes will get the tapes and thats it! No additional documents, ryders, attachments, waivers, or Jack Squatt is offerd here, at this time! That's about as indemnifying as I'm going to get.
